If you ever thought you needed more/better gear to get to the next level, just read this article and check out the environment and techniques Steven Wilson uses.  S. Wilson is a fantastic writer/performer/producer who makes wonderful sounding prog rock records (and just released officially endorsed remixes of classic Yes albums).  Chances are his "studio" will make you feel better about yours!

I remember seeing that home studio a few years ago. Interesting.
His monitor set up seems very odd to me, not to mention the complete lack of room treatment - but I guess it only goes to show...

I just read yet another article about him, and he really mixes in that room, and does his 5.1 mixes in there (and they are amazing 5.1 mixes!)   Nothing on walls or ceiling.  As he put it, once you know the shortcomings of your area and gear you can make the right decisions regardless of what you have or where you are.

Yup. As I posted a while back, my younger brother blew me away with his mixes, all done in Fruity Loops in a room that's anything but a studio using speakers from his old Toshiba sound system and headphones...

that article is almost 5 years old!

    LOL

that said, still a good read, and his approach is very much like my own.

besides the YES remixes, he is more commonly known for his remixes of classic king crimson and jethro tull albums.
