New OverTone EQ plugin - poor man's Pro-Q?
For those of you who lust after Pro-Q but find the price to be daunting, this might be a reasonable alternative: http://www.overtonedsp.co.uk/download/download_af210/ No, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles offered by Pro-Q or other high-end graphical EQs. But it's got by far the best GUI I've encountered in such an inexpensive plugin -- intro price is $22.50. It sounds good, too! Check out the free demo, which is very easy to download and install. Cheers, Eddie

A very good price for a very good equalizer. I'd stop short of comparing it to Pro-Q, though, mainly because it lacks M/S processing. But it's certainly just as pretty!

I think the $180 price difference might kinda sorta compensate for the lack of mid/side...and maybe get that in a future update ...who knows?

Hey Larry! I think what you're saying is a strong possibility. The dev says this about the plugin: We are always developing new improvements / features for future plug-in releases and updates (e.g. auto gain, comprehensive output meter options etc) but we wanted to get this version released initially so people could play with it and see (hear) what it can do. And the best part is, all future updates will be free of charge. Very cool developer ... he's been busy lately, with his SSL dynamics emulation, reverb plugin, and now this. All are pretty much as good as it gets when it comes to price / performance. One more thing I like about this EQ: CPU usage is next to nothing when the FFT analyzer is off. Turning that on makes the plugin kind of hungry, but as long as you leave it off, this plugin probably won't hammer your system even if it's used on every track. It's definitely in the same ballpark as Pro-Q 2 in that respect. Cheers, Eddie

The only thing this has in common with Pro Q, or Pro Q2 is that they are both EQs and one dev looked at the other dev's work product when decorating the GUI. $22 bucks is just about right... you'll be getting a $22 dollar EQ. This may be a perfect choice for many people, but equating this EQ to a feature and function rich EQ is wishful thinking. There is one remarkable feature that AF2-10 has that stands out: Linux compatibility.

I'm at a loss really here. The quad EQ is just as good as any other EQ and if you need a graph, just put Span after it.

Heresy! Seriously, if you're satisfied with the stock EQ, more power to you. If, however, you find yourself wishing for more bands, more curve shapes, and a nicer GUI (IMHO), then I'd say the OverTone EQ is worth looking at. And nobody's saying it's the equivalent of Pro-Q, but for a tenth of the price it's a pretty good substitute. Cheers, Eddie

SPAN actually has the ability to adjust the FFT window and the speed so you can tailor the animated spectrum display to provide either super high accuracy (my preference) or super low processing, just like Pro-Q2... and it's really cheap. I wouldn't call any old EQ and Span a poor man's Pro-Q, but I would say the combo works pretty good. :-)

I fully agree with you.
