Daltrey: "Here we are with the world in the state it is in, and we've got One Direction"
I have to say, I think he has a point. (From: The Hereford Times) ==================================== Daltrey laments current music scene Rock veteran Roger Daltrey said there are no musical "movements" at the moment, adding: "Here we are with the world in the state it is in, and we've got One Direction." The Who frontman, who along with Pete Townshend is set to perform a series of shows marking the band's 50th anniversary, said it is difficult to start a movement now "unless it's ISIS". The two surviving members from the original quartet, who formed in 1964 as the High Numbers, spoke to The Mail on Sunday's Event magazine. Roger, 70, who famously sang ''hope I die before I get old'' in early hit My Generation, told the magazine: "Here we are with the world in the state it is in, and we've got One Direction. "Where are the artists writing with any real sense of angst and purpose? "There are no movements at the moment: we had mod and then there was punk, but it's so hard to start a movement now. Unless it's ISIS." Pete, 69, said he was not bothered by similarities pointed out between One Direction's Best Song Ever and The Who's Baba O'Riley. "It wasn't important enough to get excited about," the guitarist said. "I could hear a bit of The Who in it, but so what? Considering the stuff we ripped off over the years, it doesn't really matter." Meanwhile, Pete describes his relationship with Roger as "a longstanding friendship that has turned into a bonded love, founded on a deeper understanding of each other's limitations". "I love him," said Roger. "We're like brothers I suppose." The Who - whose well-known songs have included hits My Generation, Won't Get Fooled Again, I Can't Explain, and Pinball Wizard - have weathered the deaths of t heir manic drummer Keith Moon in 1978 and bass player John Entwistle in 2002. In 2011 they are said to have reached an audience of more than 100 million when they were chosen to play at the US Super Bowl, then went on to perform at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics the following year. Their last album of new material Endless Wire was issued in 2006, and was itself the first release for 24 years. ====================================

Yes he does have a point but I've always thought that there was more than one direction. So....I know...not the brightest so help me out...what direction? Is he like so many I've been reading around here while they hold their "The End is Near" sign?

Pete Townsend is like the poster child for wearing earplugs on stage. I'm amazed that he's still making music considering the extent to which he screwed his ears in The Who.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

He is 70. We are young! We are the new musical movement. We've got great ideas. We can make it!

Beepster made a good point in my recent thread about musical 'tribes'. There are movements going on, but you have to look for them - they certainly won't be anywhere near the 'charts' (if they still have those). "Where are the artists writing with any real sense of angst and purpose? I dunno Roger, have a look around, go to some gigs....blaming One Direction for not being that is a bit 'old bloke' really.

Sounds like typical crotchety old guy stuff. I never get the guy old enough to be band's great grandfather need to single out and bash kids who are products of their time. Ever since pop music became a powerful commercial force there have always been popular "cute guy" bands or arguably marginal ability aimed at prying dollars from teen girls. I'm not a One Direction fan and find nothing appealing about their music, but i also am very aware i am not their target audience. It is almost as if he is saying that the target audience of One direction should instead like bands that do not appeal to them which is downright silly. Pulling out the "world is in a state of blah" angle is even sillier since if applied throughout most of history would be hilarious. The Monkees (and many other boy bands) were put together for primarily marketing reasons rather than strictly talent during an era that included racial riots, Viet Nam war, Cold War and wide spread fear of nuclear assault among other things. I don't see where listening to Who back catalog cures ebola, ends isis or overcomes constant partisan political fighting an more than teens listening to boy bands.

I have never heard of One Direction and will probably never hear of them again. On the other note... I think I remember Blackmore saying that Clapton couldn't play guitar. In the 60s Townshend took Clapton to see Hendrix play and they were like, "well, what are we going to do now?" LOL... J
