Fire Eater (Cover)

This song is from Three Dog Night's "Naturally" album. It was released back in 1970 and I was 10 when I bought it. I loved this album and wore it out...twice. I'd have to say it was probably the first album I ever bought, buying mostly 45's before this.

The things I love about the album are the funkiness and syncopation between the bass and drummer and the way the keys played off the guitars. This tune is the only original on the whole album. For those who don't know, Three Dog Night built their career making other people's songs famous.

While I started off doing a straight cover, I added some elements that I liked to make it a little more "me". If you don't get it, I also loved the 80's

As always, any comments are appreciated. After my last tune where I stretched a bit on my guitar soloing, this one stretched me a lot further. It isn't perfect, but the feel of the original is there, I hope.

Enjoy!

Regards,
Dan

Dan, I just listened to the original version on youtube because I didn't remember this.  They didn't do many instrumentals.  They were a very tight band and could play a number of different styles very well.  You are showing your own versatility with this.  Nice job on the guitar work.  You captured the essence of this song very well, if not improving on it.  Who knows what you're going to do next?

    All the best,

Thanks Lynn! I'm not sure they would agree I improved it, lol, but I like the way it turned out. It took me quite a while to work out the organ and guitar solos. The organ was difficult because the original doesn't have much low end, so it sounds like the left hand isn't playing anything. I'm sure he is, but I had to make a lot of guesses. Guitar solos were difficult because they panned two solos right on top of each other. I tried to play what I heard, as closely as possible, but my feel is a bit different.

A bit about the mix, if anyone wants to know:

    * Guitars are running through a Digitech GSP1101. I double-tracked almost every guitar you hear. Took forever.
    * Organ is VB3.
    * Drums are Abbey Road 70's Drummer. All played by hand on a keyboard.
    * Cowbell is from Drumasonic. I can't believe AR70sD doesn't have one.
    * Bass is NI's Scarbee (Pre, I think)
    * Waves SSL on Guitars, Bass and Drums.
    * FabFilter Pro Q 2 all over the place.
    * Kramer Tape for some crunch (mixed as a send).
    * The Glue on the master bus (very very lightly)
    * Waves H-Comp for parallel compression. (Mixed as a send).
    * Aphex Aural Exciter (mixed as a send).
    * Waves H-Delay as a send that I sent various guitar signals to using automation.
    * PSP Springbox reverb for the organ.
    * A long and short reverb for different tracks, as sends.
    * Stormdrum 2 for the 80's gated toms.
    * Omnisphere for some ambient sounds.

    That's about it.

    Regards,
    Dan

Dan, that is really fantastic - you are one talented dude - just great.

On a side note - one of my previous business partners (and still good friend) was the manager for the main singer for Three Dog Night. Unfortunately - that singer was a major heroin addict. At the time my buddy was living with Tanya Tucker - who happens to be a complete loony tune. But, I digress.

I remember the band 3 Dog Night.... I was never a big fan of them and as a result, unfortunately,  only remember the radio hits they did.

However, your cover of this tune is excellent.  Everything is in place like it needs to be. Musicianship is top notch.

One thing that really used to bug me as a musician back in the day was the lack of low end on many of the band's music back in the day. Not all, but some.  You could hear the bass but couldn't really feel it. Not on their studio work. You pointed this out when referring to the B3 in the original.

I also agree you are a very talented and versatile musician. I always enjoy listening to your material, even if it's a cover. This is a good example of your production mastery in the ways you are able to take something and bring it in a different direction by adding things to it. Awesome!

    so cool.

3 dog night is one of my alltime favorites,
especially the first 6 albums, and naturally was a favorite.

i always dug that they had a black drummer, and to this day, still one of my favorite drummers.
in my young young brain, i thought this made them a superior band, having a black drummer.
    LOL

    LOL again.......

all this stupid story, ties into digging 3 dog night, and back to your song:

you caught the element of the mix, which was the biggest thing about this.......
it was one of their first self-written songs, an instrumental, and they managed to get it on the album DESPITE the record company!! quite a coup d'état

so, your mix is true to the original mix, with a lot of studio reverb...
and the spring on keys, it's very authentic.
maybe the omnisphere is giving it that overall polished 70's vibe,
    whatever it is, it's nice.

folks might notice the heavy fuzz guitar thru some of the sections....
recorded in 1970 originally, that fuzz was integral to making the band sound heavier....
    and you nailed that tone.
    nice job.
nice covering mike allsup's guitar parts too, he was a greatly undersung player,

if you did those drums by hand, wow, that was a labor of love.

and i love, that you did some of your own thing in there,
what you added of original stuff, fits completely in with everything else..
someone that doesn't know that song backwards and forwards like i do, would never know the difference, it blends so smoothly.

    "Easy to be Hard"

    "Liar" would be another.

i'd be willing to TRY to sing either one of those for you, if you covered em

Wow Dan! What an amazing job on this song! Love the sound of that vb3. Those leads sounded great too. Very good interplay between the left and right channel. You can tell that you spent some time on this. It paid off. I can't think of one single critique. It was great. Thank you for posting this!

Thanks Bat. Like I said, I don't usually do covers any more, this was just something that I have always wanted to do. But, if I ever get the urge to do another, I will certainly let you know!

Got to admit they don't make music like they use to, like listening to the older music myself or stuff that is similar in design. This was quite brilliant.

Excellent work Dan! I'm listening to the original now. I think I like yours better. I never liked the sound of fuzz pedals. They just grate on me.

The 70s were a great time for music. What a great example of the best of what the 70s had to offer.

    Thanks for sharing this. Nice!!!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Thanks Robert! Yeah, I got a little fuzzy with some of the guitars, but I used a more modern sound for the leads.
