Win8 or Win7?

I just bought a new hard drive that I intend to use as a replacement for my OS drive.  The current drive is the same age and model as a data drive that just went out on me, so I'm replacing both of them.

I considered upgrading my motherboard and processor, but it seems that the processing world has stagnated and there aren't really any better options for me than what I currently have at a price I think would be reasonable to upgrade to.

so anyway, since I'm reinstalling the OS and all programs anyway, I wondered if I should stick to win7x64 or if I should upgrade to win8?

this is a desktop and I do not have a touchscreen
this is a multipurpose machine, I run Sonar, Sony Vegas, Office, email, IE, and it really is just one machine that handles everything I don't do on my tablet.

I'm not sure that win8 would really buy me anything would it?  I'm leaning toward sticking with win7, but wanted some expert opinions.

Re: Win8 or Win7? 2014/10/29 11:48:12 (permalink)
Hey hows it goin.

I'm no expert but I toss you my experience for what it's worth.

My son gives me all his hand me down computers, He's pretty good at building and as a musician himself builds for audio. But the bugger uses  none registered copies of Windows.
So the first thing I do is install my registered versions. Well I ended up with one more computer than I had Windows copies and went to order W7,  but windows 8.1 was half the price?
So I ordered that. Here's my thoughts.

Cheaper, Loads way faster,  works the same once you discover it actually has a normal desktop that can be populated with shortcuts just like before. In the end no real big difference in using it that a techo head can't grasp in an hour of poking around. Most of the control panel, device and systems controls are the same. All my software installed without issues, even things like DVDshrink. Photoshop CS. VCL, Win Amp.

What I didn't like is that once installed it asked me for my Windows account to register? I was lucky I actually understood this was my original Hotmail-etc account and I knew the password to log on. Now that password is the password for the computer?
What I'm seeing here is more invasive integration of my computer with Micro soft, Office Outlook,  my shopping habits etc. I hate that stuff!
I cost me $40 in bandwidth to do all the updates, Why the heck can't a brand new copy include service packs etc.?
Overall I didn't notice any difference in running Sonar on windows 8. I have my old Tascam interface set up.  We watch movies and play music. It's also a  back up studio computer just in case.  As predicted, Windows 8 tells me I don't have the correct drivers installed. It's on a list of issues that W8 pops up in the task bar tray.  But the Tascam works fine, shows in Sonar normally, it's my only audio device for the computer all else is disabled. The Tascam GUI works. I write it off as one reason I no longer use the Tascam. Hope Craig is right about the in house drivers they will soon be writing.
The other thing was the DPCLAT test doesn't work it will show a steady 1,000 ms. I need to download the other latency checker.

I'm just waiting for my case and I'm going to build from scratch.. so I'm not sure which way I'll go either as I guess I'll have to buy a new copy of Windows 8 as it's now ingrained in my office PC forever.. My Windows 7 copy is good for 2 computers so I can de activate my old DAW and just leave it as a back up system.
But if you are faced with purchasing a new copy of Windows, You might as well save the approx $70 and buy W8. I think they are doing this on purpose to get every one away from W7 as quick as possible..marketing strategy. I cannot list any reasons that would imply that Windows 7 is better. But I don't understand anything beyond the surface when it come to this stuff, any how good luck..

If you already have a license for 7 use it.  If you have to purchase a new license, get 8.  Windows 7 is solid and will be supported for a while, so there's no reason to spend money if you don't have to.

As for 8:
The rumor is Windows 10 will be free for windows 8 users and will have some good desktop usability updates, so that's a decent reason to upgrade. Windows 8 works well now, is smooth and quick, but you have to learn some of the strange interface choices and make sure your hardware is ready to go.

yes, I wasn't perfectly clear - I already have a copy of win7x64 on my machine and can load that onto the new OS drive without spending any more money.  My question really is:  should I spend money on win8 or just use the win7 I already have.

Win 8.1.1 is excellent and actually a little better than Win 7 in terms of reliability and performance (assuming your drivers are compatible).

However spending money on Win 8.1.1 is debatable in my opinion. Personally I would not bother spending the money unless you can find a really cheap deal. Upgrading your OS when you buy a new machine would probably be better assuming you can get an OEM copy.

Cheers...

I was also in the same boat (last year) as you Beags and opted for Win 8. I thought about getting touch screens at the time and since Win 8 is practically a revamped version of Win 7, I went with it. Initially, I had some issues with the automatic upgrade to Win 8.1.1 and actually avoided it for about 7 months, but just recently upgraded without any issues whatsoever and all my hardware have excellent driver support.

Win 8.1.1 runs very smoothly and haven't had any issues. I also use Classic Shell as I don't like the Win 8 Metro Gui/Win tile thingy. Like Alex said, if you can get a good deal on a Win 8 copy, I'd go for it.

If you're not into touch specific features, Win8x64 wouldn't buy you any additional performance.
On the flip side, you wouldn't lose a significant amount of performance going with Win8x64.

Actually it will buy you performance increases across the board if you look at the benchmarks. I do notice it. Whether they are significant enough to upgrade is the debate...

Don't need to read benchmarks...
I've compared performance on exact hardware configurations.
Load a (substantial) finished project on the exact same hardware (one load of Win7x64 and the other of Win8.1x64).
What you'll find is that the CPU use is slightly higher under Win8.1x64.
On current generation hardware, the performance difference is minimal.

I was really scpetikal about win 8.1 but :

1) this makes full sens with touch screen ability : a pure joy , can't go back

2) The dpc latency (use matency mon) was surpisingly better than win 7 to my surprise !!! They really did a great job on it

so my advise , take what you want , but 8.1 is really great and better in a lot of areas , and at least as good in overs...

Well I could go on forever but that is not my experience or most benchmarks. I don't think running a project is particularly accurate either as third party code and caching comes into play (inc drivers), a more rounded test a number of projects from simple to complex several times. One thing is that Win 8.1 does need some optimization esp stopping services and processes that are unneeded in a DAW environment (and latest updates). Same as 7. We probably agree both however there isn't that much difference.

There are reports that the new Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 8.1 users.

I have a dual boot system, Win 7 64 bit and Win 8.1 64 bit.  Both work equally well with Sonar X3 for me.  My backup system is Windows 8.1 64 bit.   Back in January of this year, the motherboard in my main system (the dual boot) developed problems and was sent back for warranty repair (they actually replaced it).  While that PC was down, I used my backup system and didn't "miss a lick" with the Win 8.1 and Sonar.

I have "Start8" installed on my Win 8 systems.  They boot up to a desktop that looks and works exactly like Windows 7 (I still have the Metro if I want to use that).

One comment Alex mentioned is very important - drivers. Some hardware did indeed stop driver updates with Win7, so if you go the 8.1 route, be sure to check Microsoft's hardware compatibility site.

Alex, I think you know my background.
I've been building DAWs professionally for the better part of 20 years.
My testing isn't limited to a single machine/project.
There's no set of benchmarks that better portray DAW performance than running actual audio projects.

If anyone buys Win8.1x64 expecting major performance gains (over running Win7x64 on the exact same hardware), they will be disappointed.

Want some easy to test proof?
  • Setup a current generation build with both Win7x64 and Win8.1x64.
  • Bring each OS up-to-the-minute with updates.
  • Optimize each OS for maximum DAW performance.
  • Make sure to use the exact same audio interface.
  • Load Sonar X3.
  • For easy comparison with other folks, load some of the (finished) demo projects that were included with Sonar over the last several years.
  • Start each project and monitor CPU use via Task Manager.

That said, Win8.1x64 is a fine OS.  I've been running it for a long time.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with Win8.1x64 as a DAW platform.

I recalled vaguely the blog post in #3 of this thread, but then it occurred to me that the benchmarks done were with X1.

FWIW, I wouldn't go toe-to-toe with Jim about system performance, is best to just sit back and read his posts.

It's not about that...
I've been using Win8.1x64 for a good long while.  It's a fine DAW platform.
If you use a multi-touch monitor (or want that ability), you have to go with Win8.1x64.

You don't really gain (or lose) much either way...

Within the next couple of days, I'll post some up-to-the-minute numbers on a new Z97 based machine.

Re: Win8 or Win7? 2014/11/01 06:45:35 (permalink)
Well if you want to go deep, i think cakewalk covered this a while back:
http://blog.cakewalk.com/windows-8-a-benchmark-for-music-production-applications/

BUT being a system builder myself (to the point i have my own programmed/tune BIOS and Firmware) i think mostly you guys are not covering the most important aspects.

First there´s hardware then drivers, what´s the point of going for a OS version where your usb or lan or whatever will cause spikes of 2000 dpc.
If you want the best OS for you just install both and try, disable all the hardware you don´t need open a LatencyMon and check your DPC, then start to fine tune both, first doing BIOS changes, then OS changes (energy, core parking, timers, disabling services, etc).
Play with different driver versions for the hardware you DO need, if it´s a laptop disable the battery acpi device, try software like throttlestop to lock CPU speed, etc etc
Soon you will be able to know which OS gives a more stable low DPC, go for that one.

Often the results are not BECAUSE of the OS but because of drivers/hardware for that OS.
Example: My Intel LAN performs perfect in Windows 7 with latest Intel drivers, but does monster DPC spikes with latest Intel Windows 8 drivers, solution = using the built in Windows 8 drivers... this type of stuff is something you must test out and find out.

I can get 96Khz 24bits with 128 buffer (4.9ms) (unfortunately my audiocard does not allow 64 buffer @ 96Khz) and load 3x full 8 channel omnisphere + 3x absynth + 3x reaktor + 3x waves codex + 3x waves element + 3x superior drummer add guitar rig and izotope mastering in ALL tracks and not a bump in audio... BUT only because i had to fine tune the system. If i load a clean image of Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 without no tune up it will crack and pop like crazy.

So i would concern myself mostly with hardware, as i said before in other posts, latest laptops with nvidia for instance will give a minimal DPC latency of 600 (even with power features off)... same unit with AMD gets 70... think about that. And then test both OS version and it´s drivers on both OSes.
Probably latest gen hardware will start having better driver support with Windows 8.1... probably...

For what its worth (I is an old guy), my "experience" with Win 8.1 was beyond frustrating!
I own it, it sits on a WD Black 500gb drive that I use alternately as a doorstop or coaster!
(You think I'm kidding right? NO, I am not kidding!)
You own (actually, read the EULA, you are "renting" Win 7) that's where I would stay!
And why, oh why, would anyone "argue" performance with Jim???
Do we think he pulls these things out of his arse?
Just sayin'...

Wa wa wait... Regarding hardware performance under Win7 and Win8 can vary.  A given interface might work better with a driver  written for Win8 as opposed to one for Win7 and vice versa.  This is very subjective, but a real factor nonetheless.

As for the upgrade question, Reece, dishing the cash may not be wise unless you found a really good deal.  After all, Win10 will be released later next year, but pushed back three or four times for actual release in 2017, maybe even 2018.  Win7 will hold up well since there is no indication that MS plans on ending support to date.

There are reports that the new Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 8.1 users...

Now, as for the 8.1 upgrade to 10, I was of the understanding that Win9 (now renamed to ??) will be the free update.  Yet, I have read a blurb stating that MS may consider a free upgrade to Win10 as a marketing scheme in order to win over customers by encouraging the purchase of Win8 now and gain Win10 later without additional cost.  I am not certain that that is actually the case since I have not read anything from MS in that respect.

Eh, whatta I know.

lol, well, I decided not to upgrade  and I've started building the system on win7 again.

FWIW, I finally got around to installing the Win 10 Beta.  I'm not impressed.  The Beta is basically Win 8.1 with some (poor) changes to the start menu in the desktop.  I'll be loading Sonar X3 and installing the driver for my Roland Studio-Capture on it in the next week or so (when I have time) to see how it works.  Since Sonar X3, in Win 8.1, works equal with my Win 7 installation I don't see the Win 10 Beta being any different.

I will concede that the Win 10 is a Beta version and what ultimately comes out as the final version may be a lot different.

There are already users on the Windows 10 forum that have changed the start menu to either Start8 or manually edited it to look like Win 7.
