Slate VCC - I dig it.

Recently jumped on the opportunity to upgrade RC Tube to VCC full for $25 and finally had a chance to use it on a mix tonight. I'm liking what I hear, though I seem to prefer the more subtle variations.

Tonight I seemed to gravitate towards the Trident, but I can see how the various models might work better for other material. The API was a close second, but the Trident seemed to behave a tad more evenly in this context. Both were relatively subtle.

The Neve one seemed far from subtle; no matter how I set it, it put a lot of emphasis on the low end, but I'm pretty sure that it would respond differently to a different kind of material. In fact, I already have an idea of a song I want to re-mix through it.

The SSL just didn't work for that kind of stuff, but I can see it being used for something that hits harder.

The old RC Tube wasn't bad, but I felt it didn't really add anything positive or negative to the mix.

One thing that stunned me is how little CPU it requires - that thing was on every track, every bus and the main out but it barely registered on the CPU meter.

I'm a big fan of Waves plug-ins, so NLS would have been tempting as well, but for $25, VCC was a no brainer.

And this one definitely got me interested in the rest of Slate's plugs, particularly his tape emulation.

Get FG-X if you really want to be blown away.

And Melda's MSpectralDynamics is my new number 1.
