X2 No Longer Sees My Sound Card

Hello--

I had a virus on my DAW and from that time until now--after a complete removal of the threats, Sonar X2 can't see my sound card.

I've reinstalled the sound card drivers. Sound Forge and Wave Lab can see my sound card. In fact, everything else can see my sound card but X2 :-(

In older versions of Sonar there was an audio profiler feature where you hit the button and it scanned for all of your sound cards. I guess there is no feature like that any longer.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can force X2 to scan for my sound card?

Thanks!

Stephen

What is the sound card and driver version and OS? Have you download the latest?
64 bit windows and 64 bit sonar?
Try renaming AUD.INI (google for details).
Don't use ASIO4ALL (just in case you have it).
With an ASIO driver (prerable option) there is no profiler.
Make sure you only run Sonar app and close the other apps (at first).
Thanks.

which driver mode in sonar are you using?  check it, and also check the Playback and Recording Timing masters and verify that your soundcard is listed in those.

if that doesn't solve it, try changing to WDM or ASIO mode and back again

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I should mention before the virus my card was rock solid.
My specs are in my signature, but I was running in ASIO mode.
I don't have anything else running when I launch SONAR.
The audio device window in Sonar is blank. It doesn't even see the integrated MS sound card.
My sound card is set to be the timing master.
I'll see if I can switch from ASIO to WDM and see if that helps.
Q: If none of the above work, what are the X2 repair options? If I try to install it over the top of my current instance, does it offer a repair option?
Q: I'm sorry, I don't understand these: Try renaming AUD.INI (google for details).
Don't use ASIO4ALL (just in case you have it).

You can try re-personalizing SONAR. Hold the CTRL and SPACE keys while starting SONAR, this will put SONAR back to factory defaults. The process overwrites everything in your user directory C:\Users\yourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\yourVersionOfSonar, including AUD.ini, Cakewalk.ini, TTSSEQ.ini, drum maps, metronome data.... It also resets some registry entries. Definitely worth trying before attempting a re-install. Should you elect to perform a reinstall here are the instructions http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2817470

Do you know what the potential risks are for re-personalizing? Will it have any negative impact on any previously recorded projects?

I'm guessing a reinstall is a more radical proceedure, right?

I'll check the link, but really don't want to mess up any of my previous projects.

Thanks!

Re-personalizing does not touch projects. It does reinitialize the config files so you might want to copy out the ini files from your user directory to a safe place. Then they will be available as references.

Reinstall is a bigger change. This is why I would try re-personalizing first.

Either way, nothing happens to your projects.

Regardless, after all the assurances in the world, don't forget to backup.

Ok, great. I will definitely copy the ini file and do a backup.
I'm really hoping this works. This is a relatively new DAW and this is the first major issue I've had.
Needless to say, I upgraded my AV software!

If it's relatively new I'd seriously consider an os wipe / reinstall after a virus, but only you can know if it's worth the pain

I hope the re-personalization works too but a re-install is not too traumatic, the instructions in the link take you step by step.

Unfortunately I'm unable to read signatures right now with my view of the forums so I still have no ideas of specs and can't point you to the latest drivers. I would recommend uninstalling driver software (whether you are on latest or not) and reinstalling with the latest. Try AUD.INI first though.

I understand--the mobile version thing.

I'm on Windows 7 64-bit and am using X2 Pro 64-bit. I have an Echo Layla 3G with the latest drivers for my OS. (Rock solid on my prior DAW, rock solid on this DAW before this).
After updating the sound card drivers didn't work, I uninstalled the sound card from device manager, did a reboot and did a new install. NI-negative impact.

Still don't know what 'Try AUD.INI first though' means. I'll do a complete fresh OS install as a last resort. Having to reinstall all of my software would take so much time, it's worth me exhausting all other options first.

Thanks!

Renaming the AUD.ini in your SONAR user directory and starting SONAR will rebuild the AUD.ini file.

The re-personalization described above also resets the AUD.ini and the rest of the config files.

He he. I called them first. Since it's virus related, I'm trying to resolve it myself first. I did get an AV recommendation from them though.

Well, we're getting warmer. Good news is that I was able to switch driver modes to WDM and then the profiler found my sound card, and I can use it--actually, that's very good news.

The bad news is that no matter what I've tried so far, I can't get X2 to recognize in ASIO mode. I prefer this mode, and the drivers for my sound card totally support ASIO 2.2, I just don't know what to do.

Are we getting closer to a solution? I didn't do any of the other suggestions you posted yet because of this new information about WDM mode working.

Many, many thanks,

Stephen

PS. It might be my over-active imagination, but the now time needle seems less smooth/fluid during playback--I'm tired too, so that's a factor.

I would do a clean install of windows and of all your programs on a new hard drive or completely wipe the drive that had the virus on it and use that one.

Even though you got rid of the virus, there 'could' be lingering effects and damage that isn't fixed with just the removal of the virus. Its prudent that you do a brand new install of windows and everything else. I'm almost 100% sure everything will work like it worked before the virus...

Re: X2 No Longer Sees My Sound Card 2014/11/12 16:41:17 (permalink)
Just an update. I'm prepping all my backups, restore sources, etc. for a complete wipe. I've been trying to make it work and it just isn't performing right no matter what I do. It's a <1 year old high-end ADK DAW, so I shouldn't have to deal with quirks--right?

Anyway, normally I would be really bummed to have to go through this process, considering how non-musical a system wipe and reinstall is (even with the Paragon software ADK ships with) BUT, I just so happen to be in the writing stage of a new tune and only using my DAW for scratch recording. So, I'm looking on the bright side.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Yeah, best practice for a DAW is to stay off the Internet. My challenge is I have to use it for other things because of money.

On the SSD, I work for a hard drive company and have more drives and storage space than I'll probably ever use.

ADK gave me what I need to return the rig to factory and it's a new dis drive so I feel good about how things will end up.

Thanks

I submitted a ticket for this very issue.  Initially thought X3 just lost contact with my interface, but turns out I had lost ASIO functionality.  Experimented and found WDM drivers still worked.  It happened out of the blue, hadn't messed with my system at all.
I remembered that there had been a significant windows update so I restored my computer to before the updates and it solved the problem.  With a recent virus, who knows...but it may be worth a try.

Re: X2 No Longer Sees My Sound Card 2014/11/24 12:08:52 (permalink)
Well, I didn't have a restore point that went back far enough before the virus to do the restore, so I did a factory restore with the Paragon software that ADK included with the DAW and I'm back in business.

I had to do a lot of software installs, and have some to go, but the system is rock solid and my sound card works perfectly, so I'm good.

After I get my DAW setup with everything the way I want it, I'm going to create a new backup capsule so if I ever have to do another restore, I won't have to reinstall all of my software again.

Since I have the storage, I also increased the amount of disc space that will hold my restore points so I'll be able to hold a longer history.

Thanks again everyone for the help. I'm glad I was in the writing phase of my tune when all this happened. Hey, I even just bought the upgrade from X2 to X3 for $60 bucks while I was at it!
