New Song: Complications
Hi, I've got a new song out - made with SONAR X3. It's called "Complications" - you can check it out here: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12961224It features the usual suspects: Real Guitar (now using S-Gear amp sims) Superior Drummer Trilian Bass and featuring my "Lap Steel" player from OrangeTree Samples Any comments/observations/declarations graciously received ;-)

Nice work John! The only critical comment I have is some of the bends sound too much that they are from a keyboard rather than actual bent strings, but that is really only in a few places. Otherwise, everything sounds pretty good. Mix is great, if a little narrow. Regards, Dan

I like this! Very good drum sound. The mix sounded pretty decent to me. I like the breakdown around 1:50, funky! Cool song.

Thanks for taking the time to listen guys! And for the comments. some of the bends sound too much that they are from a keyboard Dan, Those are real guitar bends ;-) Only the "slide" in the B section is samples - but that doesn't really have bends...

Perhaps your bends are so accurate that Dan thought that they are from a keyboard. Just a thought, though my thoughts are sometimes a bit stupid. kakku

There are lots of positive things about elements of this mix, the drums are nice and solid. The thing that let it down for me and my furry ears was the overall sound staging it all got a bit confused with right centre panning. Good tune, nice playing, needs a little attention how it all glues together in the sound stage. Thanks for sharing.

Hmm, well then I was wrong. Like I said, it was only 2 or 3 that I thought sounded off. Must have been tired or something. Regards, Dan

Hmm, well then I was wrong. Dan - I was just checking what you meant. Surely my bends aren't perfect ;-) Wookiee - thanks for that observation. Dan says it's narrow, are you saying there's too much panned to the right? I will admit, that I just "make it up as I go" re: panning. I just try to keep everything separate - and not all in the centre. The *real* problem might be - that there's too much going on in general ;-)

Nice tune. S-Gear sound pretty good here! Mix-wise, perhaps you could pan the rhythm guitar(s) and main lead out from center, and maybe the snare just a little so that the parts carrying the tune are bit wider?

Thanks for listening Steve. You're the second one who's mentioned the mix being narrow. I've purposely tried not to make it too wide - but maybe I need to rethink this...

Very solid piece of writing. Some of the guitar melodies are extremely cool :) Mix is pretty much there. For me I'd drop the bass a tad and bring up the lead work. Also As mentioned the mix is quite narrow. I don't really hear much to the far left or right. Still a very enjoyable track.

The mix is plenty loud on this end. Balanced and all in place. I don't think most would ever know it's software instruments...in fact, when you stated that you used Real Guitar I thought you mean't an actual guitar and not "Real Guitar" Very well done John!

Thanks a lot for listening - and for the comments Starise. It *is* a real Fender Stratocaster ;-) (not the MusicLab software instrument) I've got to come up with a better way to put it ;-) I think next time I'll say - "it's an actual electric guitar, and all the rest of the instruments are virtual" ;-)

I might disagree on the narrow comment just because - it's a guitar tune. It's not like you need to spread it all over the place to get the job done or make room for stuff. I might spread the R.Gtr wide L&R and put the lead in the center...but I dig the straight up the middle rock sound. To each his own. What do you use for a slide guitar instrument?

Thanks for listening rural - that's the way I looked at it - I didn't particularly worry about putting too much way out to the "sides"... I use Orangetree Samples Slide Lap Steel http://www.orangetreesamples.com/slide-lap-steelIt's a great instrument. I think it's *supposed* to sound more like a country type pedal steel - but when I turn up the built in compressor (which seems to distort it in a nice way) and run it through a amp sim (I use Scuffham S-Gear) - I think it sounds great. And it's not that hard to make it sound like a "real" slide player. (even Greg at Orangetree Samples thinks it sounds "real")

Sounded good. I think narrow or thin describes it but I don't know why. I sat and listened to see what was catching my attention and couldn't figure it out. Time to go get my coffee and try again. Nice instrumental.
