10 Inch Record - new Kicksville track

howdy y'all -

Here's this week's Kicksville release, 10 Inch Record: http://kicksville.bandcamp.com/track/10-inch-record

Tone Deaf (one of our main vocalists & writers) had a dream once about being chased across a clear red vinyl 10-inch record, while a giant tone arm tried to smash him into the grooves, All the electrical equipment taunted him and laughed at his predicament, until too tired to go on, "music now over, he turned off my light." Put that story over a pan-African groove that's one part soukous and one part Malian blues, and well, you get this....

I gotta say for the record, this is one of my favorite bass lines - it's not super fancy (there are a couple of slippery riffs though), but it's a LOT of fun to play, and it really shows off my Pedulla fretless nicely Anyhoo, I hope yous guys enjoy it!

cheers

kinda cool backing tracks, for sure..
but the spoken word thing just loses me.

the lyric is cool..... i'd love to hear someone get inventive...
and actually put together a really cool melody that SINGS the lyric and tells the story.

the spoken word just seems like a cop out.

    the bass is way cool
    too low in the mix.

and i understand that the 'spoken word' version is the original vision for this....

and it works fine for that.

i just think that it could be STRONGER with a sung version....
    you guys should do both.

    and put them out together.

Thanks for listening, Rob. I totally understand if someone doesn't like spoken word, but saying it's a "cop out" is way off base. We work with some extremely good vocalists like Vusi Mhlongo (The Lion King soundtrack & tour) and Aya Peard (more credits than I care to list), but this song was intended as a spoken word piece from the beginning. And as for "getting inventive," well, my guess is you haven't listened to much of the Kicksville catalog. Which is fine (I really don't expect people to go through everything), but like it or not, you really can't say we're not inventive

Still, I do appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment, so, thanks again....

Ah, didn't see your follow up comment... I hear ya, man. Well, you're welcome to do a cover and do the vocals however you think they should be done

And there *are* sung lyrics in the song, they're just in Bamanakan, not English

Great groove.   Love how the bass and guitar parts weave in and out; very well arranged and performed.   I'm no fretless connoisseur but it sounded well balanced to me!

Thanks yet again, Steve! Yeah - I'm a huge fan of African guitar playing, so it was really fun to get two very different styles to blend like this.... Guitar bits from South Africa/Congo on the left, Mali on the right, and the bass in between

This is the kind of thing that I shop for, which pretty much sums up my feelings for this song.  I love the African theme of this song, and your bass part does shine.  Count me in your fan club.

Good stuff there Conrad......enjoyed it very much (as well as the others). Reminded me of Paul Simon's Graceland album.
