Problem recording midi from an SR-16 drum maching

I am having a problem recording midi from an alesis sr-16 in Sonar 4 PE. The sr-16 midi ports are connected to an Emagic Unitor 8 mk2 midi interface in5 and out5. I have the midi trac i/0 set to unitor in5 and out5. when I arm the track for recording and start the sequencer it appears to be recording but there are no midi notes in the clip and no data in the event list. Any help? I am stumped.

Dell xps720/win xp two Delta 1010 interfaces and a Roland xv-5050 external synth.
Thanks in Advance for any help

I have an SR16, but it's been a long time since I've used it. Is the drum machine running when you start Sonar? Have you got the midi clock in the 16 set to external? Have you set Sonar to transmit midi clock? Make sure midi echo is off in the 16.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've done that...IIRC I had to set an option to start the SR-16 playing on project playback in order to get MIDI out of it. I'm not at my DAW at the moment, and I've never used SONAR 4, but I'm guessing the option will be labeled something like "slave to DAW".

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

In playback the SR-16 will not send midi notes unless you go in and turn on that function. It may receive midi and play midi but not transmit midi. Go into the SR-16 menu and make sure midi transmit is on.

Thanks to all - I had done all these suggestions and that is why I was so stumped. It turns out the problem was a bad (brand new) midi cable. Go figure- murphy at it again.
