Gobbler is screwing Windows users - all data to be deleted on December 1

I posted about this in the Sonar forum as well, figured I might as well give another heads up here. If you use Gobbler, whether for free or through a paid subscription, you are basically screwed after December 1. They are deleting all of the data from their Gobbler 1.0 server and requesting that users switch to Gobbler 2.0. They told me this in an email. What they DIDN'T say in the email was that Gobbler 2.0 does not support Windows - you have to browse their website to find that fascinating little nugget. No announcement has been given as to when (or if) Windows will be supported, so I guess you're going to have to start looking for another online backup service. I'm open to suggestions.

To be honest, the way they're handling this makes me think that even if they announced a Windows version of 2.0 over the next few weeks, I'd pass anyway. This is not the way to treat clients of your "seamless," "rock solid" data backup service. They made no attempt in their email announcement to let us know that Windows wouldn't be supported - that's disgusting. I can't find any information on what their intentions for Windows is. Do they have a Windows version in the pipeline? Don't have a clue. And why make everyone download all of their backups and re-upload them? Horribly un-seamless and inconvenient. A better service than Gobbler would have transitioned all of the data quietly in the background. If this is the standard in audio data backup then count me out.

I'm kind of shocked they would drop windows support, especially with so many competing cross-platform products. Stuff like this is what feeds people's worst fears about cloud services.

Thing to do is sit back and watch how their marketroids and face people handle it. If the new service is gonna be free of cost - they'll get away with it. Otherwise,  I predict a major increase in biotching amplitude.

The way they've gone about this tells you everything you need to know about what they think of their customers. Telling us with just over 2 weeks notice that our data will be deleted; making everyone transfer their data manually; not being clear about what Windows customers are supposed to do. It stinks and they stink. Their reputation as a reliable backup is going to be shot after this. Even if I was a Mac user I'd be thinking twice about trusting them with my data.

This is why I do not use web-based services of any kind, for anything. No cloud storage for me, thanks.

I've just spent a day cracking my own legally-purchased software because the installer wants to access a now-nonexistent authorization server.

90% of software companies are penny-ante fly-by-night basement operations that won't be in business in 5 years. Furthermore, almost none of them take reasonable care to secure your personal information, not even banks and credit-card processing companies and major retailers with large IT departments. I'm so paranoid I'm actually using cash these days. At least, at places that still accept cash.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

So what is the best way to delete Gobbler from PC and Sonar? I only used it once to make sure it was working.

I think you remove it in add/remove programs.
Personally I don't trust anybody's cloud except my own. If it isn't on a hard disk that I own then I'm not interested.

Even as a Mac user, your story has made me turn away from even considering that option. I think I got a 1 GB account as part of a promotion a few years back. I never bothered to activate or use it.

For me, Cloud back ups sound like a good second or even third back up. Very handy at times, but not something I'd want to depend on as my only option.

The issue has mostly been removed by their change of heart as posted in the Sonar version of this thread here.
