An Irish Blessing - Collaboration with Larry Hansen
I came up with this acosutic guitar part and was thinking about asking Larry if he wanted to help on it...low and behold he emailed me wondering if I was doing anything. It kind of jelled in a good way from the beginning. So I recorded the acoustic rhythm part and sang an Irish blessing to the tune. Larry added lead guitars. I added some other instruments and mixed it. https://soundcloud.com/starise/an-irish-blessing-collaboration-with-larry-hansen-da-blu-room

Wild instrumentation. Celtic and yet not. Reminded me a bit of some of David Crosby's work on "If I Could Only Remember My Name". One of my all time fav albums. You boys collaborate nicely together. Clear mix.

Very good. I would like to hear some kind of short intro but this works too. Good melody and very peaceful, relaxing sounds. Good singing and instrument work too. kakku

Warren- Thanks Warren I appreciate! I have to agree...not purely celtic..I think Larry added alot to it. kakku- kakku, I appreciate you listening! You know Kakku I was seriously thinking the same thing...really....but sometimes when I come back to something i make it worse :)...maybe I'll give that a try though. Thanks for your comments.

I like the song. There's a lot going on here and everything meshes together nicely. I don't know that I like the lyrics, "may the road rise to meet you". It makes me think your falling on the road. IMO, if that matters, I would hope for a smooth road without obstacles. Purely subjective but there it is. Great track and excellent work. I like your voice very much!

Guitarpama- lol....wanna know the truth? The Irish blessing came mostly directly from a coffee cup I was drinking out of and it had this printed on the cup :)It's a pretty common Irish blessing that I mostly copied. I added to it but I didn't add the part about the "road coming to meet you" now you have me wondering about it more. I guess maybe it means that you won't need to go far to get where you need to be...maybe someone else knows of a deeper/different meaning lol. Thanks for your comments. Beagle- Thanks for listening and commenting! Ted- Thanks. I appreciate! Wookie- Thanks bro! Larry is his old nice self still...it is great to be in the loop with him on occasion. Thanks for listening!

There is a looseness in the guitars that really makes this song work. I don't know if it was intentional or a happy accident but great stuff. I listened to your vocals intently and I think I would have liked them a bit more intimate, closer to my ear but not louder, if you know what I mean. The song had me in mind of Loreena McKennitt, and her vocals. It sound like the microphone is only 1 inch away from here mouth when the engineer recorded her. Anyway, just a thought. I always enjoy your music Tim and this song has that special something.

wow...very cool.....for me no matter the tune, what make separates the good tunes from the really really good tunes is if the honesty of the song peaks through...this was ultra convincing and just a home run in the department. the song was meant to be... great job!

Great collaboration! The vocals + instrumentation are very well done and the mix is clear as crystal. There indeed is a lot going on instrumentally in this number and it all works.

rebel007- Thanks for your comments! You know, I didn't think Larry was going to be able to "fit" into this mix. I basically handed him a mix that was already busy and in my thinking it had few holes in it to play. I even offered to trim it down on my guitar part. I was amazed when I got it back! He made it fit and made it better IMO. You'll laugh when you hear how I tracked the vocals. I had a few mics set up already- a Sterling ST55 I think and an MXL 661. I tracked my guitar on those mics in stereo. When I was ready to try a vocal I thought to myself, what the heck I'll just use the same mics to see what happens. I had fully intended to use better mics and this was just an "experiment"...so I pulled them in, adjusted the levels and tracked both at the same time...and very surprisingly...it worked :) thepogue- Thanks I appreciate! Freddy J- Thanks Freddy J ! I appreciate your comments and listening!

This song works so well because of the convincing vocal. It sounded big and the acoustics jump out of the speakers. You have a knack for this style, it seems. Take a bow, you two!

This is a strong song - well done. I think it would have made a great Christmas tune - has a very classic sound to it. All the instruments are well-played and the mix is perfect.

What a great song and production! I love the lyrics and playing. It sounds perfect on my system here in my studio. You both really nailed this. Excellent work. I love it. At times, I could hear some percussion to hold down the fort but it is not necessary at all. Brilliant job.

Hey, Tim and Larry, Excellent work on this great 70's style folk song that reminds me of a nice cross between CSN's acoustic guitar work with Harry Chapin's vocals! Great work on the vocals and acoustic rhythm, Tim and it's always a pleasure to hear Larry's beautiful, tasty guitar work woven throughout a song! Fantastic collab, guys! I thought Jack Black was singing for a second lol. The acoustic guitar sounds really crisp...really nice. Hmm a couple of seconds of Battle of Evermore, I thought I heard. I liked the "bagpipes". Nice Job Ben

Nice work! Sounds great. The acoustics are performed a bit loose yet together enough to push things forward. And the bagpipes do add a little Celtic thang...

Lynn- Thanks Lynn! Mark - Great idea! To make a similar Christmas tune! When a person gets older is that when we start to sound more "classic" ? :) Tony- Thanks for your comments! Rimshot- I thought hard about adding percussion but in the end it didn't happen, mainly because I was going for more of a sparse sound. Now that you mentioned it though I could picture a fuller arrangement here. Thanks for listening! H- Our next number will be a little less sparse and might suit your liking better. Larrys guitar will be the star of the show in that piece. We tried a few different ideas so far. Thanks for your comments! Bob- Thanks man! I appreciate the comments. Ben- Thanks for listening Ben. I used more of a tenor voice on this one...didn't emphasize higher notes, and the mic selection seemed to be better suited here for the material even though it was somewhat unintentional. Thanks for your comments !! Bapu- Thank you! SteveC- I know what you mean. I thought the same thing. There's some "swing" happening and it shows in a few places. I decided against editing it. Thanks for listening!

I grew up with the initial lyrics framed as a needle stitch. :-) I like the complex interwoven parts. It's kinda like a celtic knot.

Very nice, I really enjoyed that. There isn't much happening in the lower frequencies and this was probably by design. Which is certainly not a bad thing. My brain was anticipating a bass instrument to come in and it never did. Again, not a bad thing. Real nice.
