Abstract Extract Excite - For those with no class

Added guitar and got little help with vol mixing (but still not sure). Most of the guitar leads were live laid down with terrific backing track by Wogg. Just added some additional guitar tracks. Had posted some time ago but was slacking on the mix, a ever going learning process.
This is a brilliant tempo piece that favors a contemporary jazz ensemble, but in this case was hijacked by a guitar butcher.

I really like the  mood and vibe this piece conveys.  It has a nice chord progressions overlaid by solid guitar tracks.  The tonality throughout is superb.  Yet, though it's panned, it sounds fairly narrow in my speaker's sweet spot.  I'd like to hear a little more left to right placement of the elements in order to give them some breathing space.  I'm not talking about much, and that's my personal taste.  This is gem waiting to shine.  BTW, I like the song that follows, too.

Thanks for that, I spent a lot of time trying to get mix right and each revision something else in the track jumps out, and do over again. I think I know what you mean about "more left to right placement", but I'm not sure, would really like if you could expand a little on that. Again thanks for your comments, they mean a lot. capg

I quite enjoyed that though I agree with Lynn it does come across a little on the narrow side.

What I mean by left to right placement is that you could place some elements as far as 75 - 80% left and some that far on the right.  Some of the greatest recordings of all time have very wide panning which opens up the mix.  Not all solos need to be centered, especially if there's cross play between two or more instruments.

Lynn, I want to be certain I understand your suggestion especially if it can improve the song and my understanding of fine tuning the mix after the recording is done. That part, to my surprise, is as critical if not more to get the best sound possible. Wookiee agrees with you so it validates I'm missing something. Is there a song you have in mind that would demonstrate this panning? Is the dueling banjo's in deliverance an example? (hope I'm not embarrassing myself) Can the panning be modified in post production? And I use a spare bedroom for my studio, can a certain speaker placement help optimize recognizing panning placement as well as other attributes?
    Again thanks for the input

Some good playing here.  Is that a real bass player or synths?  The mix does seem "narrow" as the others have said.  I don't know how to fix that but Lynn had some good suggestions.  i enjoyed this tune.

Thanks, All but the guitar is a backing track. Most of my stuff I create the backing track with guitar and keyboard using synths. A fellow forum member posted this excellent backing track inviting those interested to have at it. I think he was looking for a more jazzy style. I really need to understand the "narrow". Is it the guitar or the backing track or both that is narrow. My guitar pedal was set to modulate between channels, does it need more spread? Anyrate, appreciate the comments, I learn from them (except this narrow thing, maybe my headphones are on too tight?)

    Wow, this is still going?!
The link at the top is not working for me, where's the tune CaptG?

The original backing track is mine, posted here: https://soundcloud.com/paul-graves-1/abstract-extract

I just tried the link and worked ok. I cannot say enough about this backing track, the direction changes still get me going every time I listen and has been a blast to work with. I struggle with mix and after adjusting the vol mix on some of the guitar tracks and adding additional tracks wanted to see if I could get more constructive feedback, so I posted the remix a few weeks ago. And has been amazing what I have learned, and still trying to figure out how to apply some of it. The songs I create the backing tracks myself are simple and lack creativeness like "Abstract Extract", Wogg, this has been one jewel for me, can't thank you enough for the opportunity to experiment with it.  capg

    Link worked... Not bad Capt!

I think the "narrowness" is coming from layering on top of the completed mix for the backing track, there's not much you could do with that as is.  I'm not sure how many guitar layers you have in there, but if you have multiple you could pan them heavier.  You do have a cool stereo chorus in some places that sounds nice.  Also, some mid EQ cuts to the backing track may make a little more room for your tone, but may start to kill bass / drums if you go too far.

Thanks for that, I think I'm starting to understand, and I had suspected that not being able to adjust individual tracks of the backing track would limit my options for the final mix. And can't kill that bass and drums, they are the main stage, gonna have to find someone else to kill (where's that cowbell player?) Are you playing a real bass? I have several good bass synths' but hard to bring to realism due to my keyboard style (like a caveman turning a stone into a wheel)  Again thanks for the tips.

Definitely real bass, synths never get the full dynamics, especially for slap style. That's my main instrument really, everything else I play is trying to keep up with the bass.

Very creative. The playing is nice man - love it - there's a lot of '60's feel to parts of this.
