New track

This is my newest track. The track has many chord changes and so I named it Changes.I mixed with my Grados as I don't have access to my monitors.I would welcome some comments.

Sounds good. I'm listening on small computer speakers and it all sounds fairly in balance to me.

I was expecting or anticipating a solid instrumental chorus with a cool musical hook to occur somewhere around the one minute point in the song. Of course I'm no expert on this genre. Just my observation.  The repetition needed something to break it up and take the song to a different place. At 1:50ish  the break came. it slowed the pace and then a key change which was well executed.

    Good job on this tune

Thank you Guitarhacker for your nice comment. I must confess that I have trouble with making hooks. Also I must say that I never actually make intentionally what ever style it is that I make. I usually try to make dance music but something else is always the end result.

Sounds like you are making some progress and as Herb notes the mix works here as well.

I always hesitate a bit on electronica because without lead instruments or vocals or not on a dance floor or backing a video, I just want more.  It is good and mixed well, just needs that other element, imho.

Antti, you have a very good ear for melody and progression.  The mix sounds big and cinematic, so nice job for using headphones.  If you primarily use phones, you may want to consider the Focusrite VRM box which allows headphones to emulate numerous speakers and listening environments.  This tune could easily evolve into something different as time goes by, but it works for now and shows your skills.

    All the best,

The mix sounds nice and the melody is good. My only observation would be to develop the melody more as you keep it going. It just seems to meander as it is. It's a good melody and you've got a lot to work with. The only example I can think of is an episode of Star Trek TNG where Picard and Commander Darin have duets together. Picard on his flute and Darin playing the piano. They play Frere Jacques and he improvises around the melody.

I don't know exactly why, but all I could think of was Neverending Story while I was listening to this. The mix is just fine, and the instruments sound great. I, too, would like a little more melody development, but it is decent the way it is. Good work!

@Lynn:I might get that Focusrite VRM box if it's still available for a good price. I will get access to my monitors next year and will try to mix with those.
@:Guitarpima:I will return to this track and try to develop the melody though it sounds difficult.
@:Dcumpian:I'm glad you thought the tune and mix were ok.

Like Wookie I can also hear the progress you're making - your mixes are getting a little fuller and punchier as you go along.   This one has a pleasant melody + variations and a nice smooth sound.  A bit Vangelis-y.

    Hey kakku,
The intro actually kind of reminded me of Owl City, it has a cool vibe. I think vocals could really enhance a track like this. One thing that I thought could really help is switching the orchestration up just a bit in more stripped down section. What if the melody was played by an acoustic instrument, like a piano for instance?

Hi Antti, yea the sequencing is excellent, you understand melody, it's not easy to create harmony, cadences and all that sort of stuff.  Although I'm not sure of your musical background.  The mix is fine, it's warm possibly a little scoop out at 400hz just to tighten the low-mids.  I'm not going to say I like it...it's way to happy and up for me...I'm mister gloomy.  But I appreciate the work.

P.S it would be nice to know who I am talking to i.e. avatar.  I like to put a face to the name.

P.S.S Oh try and come up with a title, a title really helps put the listener into the story you are telling...maybe space trek no9 or something along those lines.  Try and envision what you are saying with the music.  This really helps, otherwise the listener i.e. me is pissing in the wind lol.

Thank you Ben for a great comment. There were some really good ideas in it. Atm I am not ready to put my face as an avatar. I have played guitar and piano for a couple of years but that is ancient history. Otherwise I do not have much musical education.

Great melody line throughout with a good shuffle mix of beats.

However your melody line uses the same boring rhythm throughout.

It needs a stand out section, Find the main recurring melody line of the track and stack it up, add a staccato upper octave synth on the beat and add an extra shaker to tell us where it is at.

Some movement in the synth (LFO will help) as well as just applying a moving dance filter on the lower dynamic part before opening it back up for the chorus.

Its there it just needs to be sculpted for interest.

    Well done,

Considering you mixed - and presumably mastered - this on Grados, the spectral balance turned out quite nice. I'm guessing you've spent many hours listening to those headphones.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
