Rewire not available in Sonar 8.5 and Reason 5 with Windows 7 64 bit

I know it's time to upgrade. :)

I recently upgraded my workstation to Windows 7 64 bit and reinstalled my old versions of Sonar Producer 8.5 and Reason 5 and now Rewire is greyed out and not an option even on older projects where I used Reason in the past.

I have tried reinstalling both several times and even tried installing a demo copy of the newest Reason and installing Reason in 32 bit mode as suggested in one of the Reason forums.

I would be willing to purchase a more recent version of either software and start learning it all over again it seems, but I am not sure which one seems to be the problem.

Are you using SONAR in 32 bit? You can install both versions without issues on the same machine, but I suspect you may be trying to use the 64 bit SONAR with 32 bit Reason. I do not own Reason, so just speculating here... Not sure if this is an issue.

I loaded SONAR 7 when I got my first Win7 64 machine and quickly shifted to the X-series.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Time to upgrade. :)
You answered your own question.
Rewire is Propellerhead propriety protocol. They released a 'Rewire64' when they made Reason 64 bit, (I believe with version 6); After which Cakewalk implemented with Sonar X3.

I can confirm both answers. Either you need to use 32-bit versions of SONAR and Reason, or 64-bit versions (in which you'll need to the 64-bit ReWire dll).

Reason still makes a great instrument rack for SONAR

Thanks for all the help.  In case this helps someone else. I can now tell you what works and what doesn't.  I did a ton of installing and uninstalling this weekend.

Sonar 8.5 (64 bit) will NOT rewire and work with Reason 5 (32 bit)
Sonar 8.5 (32 bit) WILL rewire and work with Reason 5 (32 bit)
Problem with this is that the Mackie Onyx 1620i 64 bit drivers will not work with 32 bit.

Sonar 8.5 (64 bit) WILL rewire and work with Reason 8 Trial version (64 bit)
Sonar X3 Trial (64 bit) WILL rewire and work with Reason 8 Trail version (64 bit)
They both work with Mackie Onyx 1620i drivers.
They both work with the ASIO4all drivers as well.

I really am familiar with Sonar 8.5 so I am leaning toward picking up a copy of Reason in 64 bit.  Seems like the cheaper option.

I would definitely recommend using the Mackie 64-bit drivers over ASIO4ALL.

Another option is to take advantage of the current upgrade price to X3, and get Reason Essentials. Then if you want the other Reason instruments and such, upgrade to a full version of Reason in the future.

The 8.5 vs. X-series issue has been debated here quite a bit. I think it's fair to say the consensus is that there's a significant learning curve when making the transition. Some people are happy with 8.5, so feel there's no need to change. Some people like particular aspects of 8.5 which are not in X3 and therefore are sticking with 8.5. Those are both valid, "if it ain't broke..." attitudes IMHO. However, I do think the majority of people who've made the switch and become comfortable with X3 would not want to go back to 8.5. There are several standout features in X3 like the comping, ARA/Melodyne integration, ProChannel, VST3 support, better plug-ins, screensets, superior workflow, etc. that are extremely compelling.

It's good you're checking out the trial X3 version, as that will allow you a more informed opinion. But do keep in mind it will likely take the full 30 days to get a handle on the program.
