Just wondering aloud.

I don't. It's not that I'm against it, it's just that I have American employees who would have a hissy fit if I made them work on that day, so I have to do everything. Every year I've been in this country, I've worked like a dog on Thanksgiving. Maybe one day I'll do it. Then again, as a vegetarian I'd hate to be the guy who has to have a special dish cooked for him.

Sometimes people feel bad that I have to work on Thanksgiving. But I tell them, what do I care? I'm British. The holiday has no sentimentality for me. Now Christmas, that's different. I have to work every year and it throws me into a hissy fit.

So, American or Brits are capable of hissy fits.

Who knew.

My brother in law sends a card to his Mom on Mothers Day when it isn't even Mothers Day.

I've had to write to him about this, he should send it to his Mum when it's actually Mothers Day here.  I had to take several days off for that as I ended up being confused but that may be just because he lives in Portland.

Do you guys take a day off for what you call 'Labor Day' too?  Careful how you answer that because that might confuse me as well.

Here in Britain the concept of Thanksgiving is pretty far-fetched as we generally have absolutely nothing to be grateful for aside from not having to sit down for an awkard meal with relatives we only see once a year.

Wednesday, January 1 New Year’s Day
Monday, January 20 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 17 Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 26 Memorial Day
Friday, July 4 Independence Day
Monday, September 1 Labor Day
Monday, October 13 Columbus Day
Tuesday, November 11 Veterans Day
Thursday, November 27 Thanksgiving Day
Thursday, December 25 Christmas Day

There are some days that most people get off work, like Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The rest of them pretty much depend on where you work. If you're a teacher or other government employee then you're going to get MLK off, for the rest of the population it seems to be 50/50. Same for Columbus Day and Veterans day. Federal employees get them off but a lot of other people have to work.

I remember celebrating July 4th (1981) in London.  Several of the locals joined in because, well, it was just another excuse to down a pint or five.

no turkeys here-in fact it`s a bit of a rarity I have only had a few times-probably because we have huge chickens.
but,we do take the day off to watch a horse race-how egalitarian is that?

also,
we get a holiday for a Queen we don`t want or need, who hates visiting us
we get a holiday to remember our war dead who died for the same queen.
we get a holiday to recognise all the indigenous people we massacred and stole from.
we get 3 days off for a public execution that happened 2000 years ago and eat chocolate rabbits.
we get 3 days off for someones birthday, even though it`s months early.

unfortunately I have always been selfemployed so none of it really matters.
oh well

Yes I forgot about those and of course our National Treasure the former Mrs Cheryl Cole amd his lovely wife the Rt. Hon Wayne Rooney, and a National Health service that has worked tirelessly to rid me of all my mental health issues.

I'm happy to state that I no longer have to take a spare pair of elasticated trousers to the resource centre and its been months since I ate an entire jigsaw puzzle while I was there.  Apparently that makes me a winner.
