SONAR as a gift from a currently registered user

I am a registered user of SONAR X3 Producer. I want to give SONAR as a gift to a friend/business associate. I am not sure if I want to give the full producer version or some other lower level of SONAR or even Music Creator.

My question is: Can I login to my Cakewalk account and order one of these versions and get some kind of "upgrade" discount since I legally have purchased the X3 license? Can a person buy more than one upgrade?

Any thoughts?

No. One upgrade per license. A new user must start with a retail version. Of course, those are on sale. It may be easiest to purchase from a third party vendor and give the new user the redemption code if it is a download or box of disks. Then they can redeem the code and register as a new user.

Sonar X3 is selling at Guitar Center and Sweetwater for $59.00 now. I expect it will allow your friend to upgrade for a good discount when the X4 versions come out if he likes the basic X3.

As mentioned in another thread about giving software as gifts:
It would be great to be able to buy downloadable plugins and other software as a gift to "third persons".
In my opinion there is clearly a rather big marketing possibility totally neglected.
All software isn't even available as hard copies anymore.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Just a note about new customers buying SONAR. It used to be that when buying initially it had to be bought form a vendor outside of Cakewalk. But it seems Cakewalk is selling to new customer, now. Here's the link: http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=10-CXSP3.00-35E

But if Guitar Center and Sweetwater is selling the full version to first time purchasers for $59, I don't think that can be beat. Direct whoever you wanted to buy a copy of SONAR for to that great sale price.

Hmmm, wait a minute... I checked that link and found these:

New customer X3 Basic - $69
http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=10-CXSR3.00-35E

X3 Producer Upgrade - $159
http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=10-CXSP3.00-30E

Total - $228 (which is $121 cheaper than the post above).

For a new customer to get X3 Producer for $228 is a steal.

Thank you for the input. I figured I wouldn't be able to purchase more than one upgrade, but I had to ask. I will get the $59 SONAR X3 from Sweetwater. I will be working a lot with this band and thought it would behoove us all if they started making their own demos before coming to me for the final recording.  Having them work with SONAR will make things easy for compatibility. So it will be my gift to them.

That's a pretty good idea.
You'll probably save more than $60's worth of your time in the long haul.

That's right... The band is gonna figure out that they can record them selves and you'll have a lot more time for fishing.

I am not worried about this band doing final recordings themselves. They are old school and want real drums and real guitar amps. They simply don't have the capability or know-how to do those things. They will make demos with programed drums and emulation guitars, get the songs arranged etc... Then come to me for real micing and all that.

I don't think it was mentioned above (I might have missed it - and it may not apply to this situation), but just to point out that the licensing of Sonar does not allow sale or transfer to anybody, and when the initial install is done there are two explicit check boxes that spell that out, and are required to be checked to indicate acceptance and understanding of that in order to proceed with the installation.

Cakewalk has been super kind to actually rely on trust for the above, since they began, and as posted above by others, the current sale prices are so low that someone should be able to get a fantastic product with whatever level of X3 that they can afford.

Licensing probably wasn't discussed because the issue in this thread (as I read it) is how to purchase SONAR as a gift and get the best price possible. I did mention the one upgrade per license but choose not to go into the details of what upgrades mean WRT the license or other transfer issues.

That's right Scook, this was about purchasing a new license as a gift as I love SONAR and would never consider transferring my license to anyone. I am very happy with SONAR and will continue using it moving forward.

Just to add one little tiny thing, Before you purchase X3 basic, check out the price difference for Studio. Sure they can upgrade themselves, but Studio is very, very close to Producer in features , were as X3 basic is,, well basic. I purchased Studio for $99 as an upgrade from LE.
LE comes with Roland stuff and now is shipping with Tascam's new interfaces.
You could buy each of them a Tascam 2x2 interface and they will have LE free..

I was 99.99 percent sure this was the case - just thought I should post it, in case it ended up factoring into any thought processes.  The very presence of your post asking about doing what you were/are contemplating indicated to me that you were trying to follow Cakewalk's  rules.  :)
