Of course a good new PC can always be a big help.  Probably outside of your intentions, but I do want to mention that I switched from a desktop to a laptop a couple years ago and it was a huge help to my music output.  The power of good laptops these days fully keeps up with music production needs.  Laptops are not necessarily that expensive.
Two keys for my laptop that have made things fantastic: two internal hard drives, and both of those hard drives being SSD.

For me, the laptop approach is great because I can work in my studio area when I'm feeling creative and need all my outboard gear, or I can bring the laptop into another room and I can still use it for Sonar editing, and I can keep doing stuff with it.

I've even kept the creative flow going when traveling.  I suppose you could do that with all of that tablet based software now, but I like the full PC feel of Sonar and all of the tools at my disposal on my hard drives.  Bottom line, I'm able to get in more time with music production as a result of having the Sonar environment move around with me rather than being stuck in one room.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

The 5930k is overkill for basically everything, but it is an awful lot of fun to have (I've got one). Not knowing the specifics of the UK market I can't say for sure on pricing, but it looks roughly in line with things.

Thanks for the feedback. I think the laptop idea could be a possibility. I don't know what the pricing would be like for that kind of spec.

    Thanks

You should check out Purrrfect Audio.  I bought my PC from Jim and think it is awesome.

Well you can't get a laptop with that kind of spec, 6 core CPUs are the purview of desktops only. However for a nice high spec laptop you generally are talking a reasonable bit more than a desktop, but not too much. You do pay a bit of a premium to pack all the parts in to a smaller space. Really what you tend to pay more in is performance. Like a GTX970M costs around what a GTX 970 does, maybe a little more. However its performance is 60%ish of its desktop counterpart, despite the name.

Same kind of deal with CPUs. $220 in a desktop gets you a Haswell quad core that runs at 3.5GHz base 3.9GHz boost. Same general price in a laptop only gets you a dual core, you have to spend more like $380 to get a quad that's 2.3GHz base 3.3GHz boost.

Thing is, systems are so powerful these days, it doesn't matter a ton. While a $2500 laptop isn't near as powerful as a $2500 desktop, for most things you just won't care, it'll be more than powerful enough.

Unless there is a space issue, I would prefer a desktop over a laptop.

Thanks guys. I've had a look round and the price does seem good.

I use omnisphere and stylus alot and thought if I go for a high spec that it will be able to cope. I've also a love for the prochannel and the Softubes addon and im using them on every track, yet is taking its toll on my current system when I'm running a project with 32-40 tracks . It was cutting edge 5 years ago :-)

Not a bad build but I would personally hold off. I'm waiting till after the new chips come out in Jan when the Haswell chips will go down in price and hopefully the cost of DDR4 will as well. The build I made on NewEgg had $1800 just in RAM because I was going with 64gb. That is way too high but it's new tech so I decided to give it a few months.
