Interleave Stereo/Mono Button Missing From Softsynth Instrument Track Inspector?
Hello All, Just wondering if I am going crazy, but I cannot find the "Interleave Stereo/Mono" button in softsynth's instrument track's inspector? How do I go about using this option on a softsynth? Thank You, Alewgro

Split the instrument track and use the interleave on the audio track associate with the synth. If you just need better control over the stereo output of an instrument track use Channel Tools.

It's a pain in the ass, and I'm not sure why Cake designed it like this, but the interleave button is not visible on instrument tracks. You have to split the track into audio/MIDI and use the one on the audio track. Why they couldn't have just put it on the audio tab of an instrument track is beyond me. I suspect they'll say something along the lines of "Simple instrument tracks were designed to be simple and interleave buttons are considered advanced usage" or something like that. Personally I use the interleave button quite regularly and also like the tidiness and convenience of instrument tracks, so I wish they'd fix this.

Thanks guys, great answers here, and yep it works splitting it out. Am I using it for the right reasons? I am trying to make a stereo synth bass patch to be mono in the mix. I remember back in the day you can actually MAKE mono tracks, but I can't find that option anymore. Thank You, Alewgro

Select the clip and choose Clips > Convert to Mono. However I believe this is a simple addition, so if both channels are hitting max headroom, you'll get clipping. Use Process > Apply Effect > Gain and lower the gain prior to converting to mono. You can create a mono track when recording by choosing only the left or right channel of an interface stereo pair.

If you're using a soft synth for the bass part....when inserting a soft synth you get the screen where you could choose 'all synth audio outputs mono'......you have a mono bass then good luck

When converting a stereo synth bass track to mono, I usually just flip the interleave button to mono and then change the track's synth input accordingly. For each audio output the synth has, you can select mono left, mono right or stereo. I change it to mono left or right. However sometimes the synth bass will have a lot of good stereo information in the higher frequencies which is a shame to lose by converting it to mono. But you still want to keep a nice centered bass. So what you can do is insert a plugin which centers frequencies below a certain threshold and keeps everything above it in stereo. Tone Projects make a free VST called Basslane which does this perfectly. Just slap it onto a synth bass track and set the frequency threshold to something like 200-300Hz(or lower if you like). Now everything under that threshold will be centered in mono, leaving the higher frequencies with their stereo width. Stereo synth bass sounds are very popular these days but if the lower frequencies are wide then the track loses a lot of its oomph.

sounds great that could be achieved also if you clone the bass track, insert Channel tools and turn 'mid gain' all down. now it's a stereo track with no signal to mid.....then you could filter out the lows with fe Sonitus or pro channel EQ.

Sharke, Wow this seems like a cool VST. Would you say the setting I have in right now works? I wasn't sure about the WIDTH or the SLOPE options. http://postimg.org/image/6v4hy4889/ Thanks, Alewgro

Yeah that would work. It all depends how mono you want the bass to be. I think you can isolate the frequencies below the threshold using one of the monitor buttons on the right. So have a listen and check that there is nothing below the threshold that feels like it could sit well in stereo. Sometimes you can set it lower, like 100-150Hz. It all depends on the synth and the song. The slope just sets the slope of the transition between mono and stereo at the threshold you have set, with 12dB being the steepest.
The width control sets the width of the frequencies below the threshold. If you just want to narrow the low frequencies rather than mono them, you can set the width a bit higher.
