Anyone have a Jeff Beck Strat?

I'm kind of in the saving up for a new guitar mode and thinking about my options. The EJ strat would be nice and I've read a lot about the American Deluxe models, but the Beck with the hot noiseless pickups has been on my mind. The LSR nut looks like it would be a nice feature too. I wonder what the neck feels like? My current Strat is a 50th anniversary American with 1954 Custom shop pups (I changed the bridge for a Duncan Hotrails.) I've also been looking at a few Gretsch's...Duo Jet's are sexy!

No, I don't have one and wouldn't want to fork out so much when there are work arounds as such.

I have an American Highway One HH with a 2 point tremolo set up à la Jeff Beck (the G string pulls up to a Bb).It has coil tapping so gives a great sound. I put graphite on the nut to help get rid of some of the friction (Himself has rollers AFAIK).

I also have a cheaper HSH with 2 point trem which I just got and am setting it up the same. 6 point trems are more complicated to set up to emulate JB.

You'll also need to make sure the volume pot is "loose" ie very little restistance when you turn it with your pinkie.

If you do a search on the web you'll find numerous explanations about JB's set up, the best one being an interview with his guitar tech.

I can't actually play like him, but the thought's definitely there ! Good luck in your eventual choice.

    Cheers,
    Jerry

Yep that's a nice one. Nice video and song too. I've been looking at the Black and Silver Duo Jets with Dynasonics, only because I like the look. There aren't any Gretsch's around here so I have no idea about the neck or feel of it. If I get another Strat I want it to be different than what I have. The Beck pups and rosewood neck would be a huge change. The American Deluxe strats have the N3 pickups...A single coil in the bridge would be different as well. So far I haven't seen any good sells for any of these.

The JB model has gone through a number of changes over the years. The originals had huge necks and lace sensor pickups. I recently saw one that had a smaller neck and regular single coils. I wouldn't buy one without getting your hands on it first.

My personal favourite Strat is the Eric Johnson. They are really nice in a vintage way, with some special extras. The neck is quarter sawn maple, the pickups are custom designed and the tuners have stepped posts to ensure a good break angle across the nut.

the strat i built (using USACG body/neck) was based partly on the EJ model, partly on the SRV model, partly on my own specs....
    the 12" radius is key.
with the EJ and SRV, the pau ferro fretboard is key....

and with a tiltback headstock, and a graphite nut, i didn't feel the need for a LSR type nut..

but i've played the American Deluxe, which is half the cost of the JB, and feels just as nice.
it has the LSR, and works well.

if you have a favorite strat now, why not just buy an LSR and have a luthier put it on and set up your strat?

    custom pickups are easy,

these sound better than ANY fender pickups i've heard:

    http://wildepickups.com/Wilde_Bill_s_MicroCoils.html

    and so much cheaper......

i feel my custom usacg build is superior to any fender on the market.

and i only spent @ $1200 on it

after playing literally hundreds of fenders,
i knew exactly what i wanted,
    and built it.

I don't want to touch my preferred Strat...It's fine as is. The American Deluxe's are $1499 (Only the HSS models have the LSR) and the Beck is $1599 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/StratJBOWT. It's basically the double coil Beck pickups vs. the single coil N3. I'm not a fan of the color options for the Beck model. The American Deluxe Plus here...http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/StratADPMMIB looks like a nice guitar and the compound radius neck sounds like a good idea. I drove 11/2 hours to my closest Guitar Center Last weekend, but they didn't have any of these in stock and no one there knows anything about guitars.
I'm a little disappointed that there hasn't been any Fender or Gretsch sales so far. Maybe in a week or two the good stuff will go on sale. Everywhere I read how great the EJ strat is, but since I can't play one...

That is an idea. Where did you get your parts? It would be the only way to get everything I would really like to have. I would like to play a 12" radius and see if I like it. Mine is a 9.5 and that's a strike against the Beck because it is too. I'm leaning towards waiting and watching and trying to get an EJ cheap. A new one is $1899 and that puts me in Gretsch territory. If I spend 2 grand it will be a Gretsch.

That would be the point. I've always wanted a Gretsch, don't know why, but I've always wanted one. I don't really want to spend $2700 on the one I want though...so having a different kind of Strat would be my next choice. I don't play live anymore so for recording having different sounds is a plus. If I decide to pursue the Custom build I'll get in touch. I won't waste your time until I decide for sure. I appreciate it.

When you start thinking "parts guitar", it's a pretty wide field with all kinds of options available depending on where you get the parts - from some places that basically let you build your own variation of a basic Strat or Tele, to ones (like the two below) that will route a variety of body shapes for whatever combination of PU's and other options you might desire, to other more completely custom parts builders.

Some here will swear by USACG, while I prefer to use Warmoth:

    http://www.usacustomguitars.com/

    http://www.warmoth.com/

There is of course some work to be done, as well as the need for tools and ability to do a proper setup involved, and lots of decisions to be made.

But for many of us it turns out that the greatest danger with a parts build is that the first one you complete comes out too good, leading to a rather expensive new hobby.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I wandered into Tom Lee Music store on Black Friday to see what was going cheap. The staff who seems to know me by name now ? placed this Strat in my hand and totld me to go try it out. It was a $2,800 model going for $1,400 with case. It was nice.. but. They left me alone and I had nothing else to do so I started pulling ALL the strats off the wall and playing them. I was using a Fender Blues Deluxe. Boy, the $500 models are junk.. bad necks, and terrible sounding pups. You had to spend over $1,000 to get anything I would want to own.
There was one Custom shop that was a return so $1,000. It was real weird because it had a hard tail piece and 2 Semore Duncan pups. It had a stock 5 way swicth and even though it was set up like a Les Pual pick up wise, It still Quacked in the 2nd position. Anyhow I thought about buying it,,, I don't have that kind of money,
So then I spotted a set of Mod Shop pups and a mother of toilet seat pick guard , this only cost me about $75. I have upgraded my custom built Strat and am now into it for $500. It is better than 90% of all those strats I played.

My brother has the Jeff Beck model. Plays like a dream and sounds very good. The shaved heal adds a nice touch. It has the roller nut ( yea not sure what to call that ) and the trem works very nicely. I have a squire strat in my collection and I used to own a 61 years back - and I really like my squire to tell the truth , I've had it about 20 years and it's a very solid guitar. So, the not so short story is - You have to have one in hand and know that you can do a lot to a strat to knock it into shape.

If you have a noisy strat, these are the ticket! dead dead quiet.

Bill Lawrence designed those for fender.

I wonder what the neck feels like?

Big differences in the EJ and EC necks.
I have many different Strat and Strat style necks that I've either purchased or made and IMO it is the most
important part of the guitar to get right. Everything else is pretty easy to change.
Knowing the fretboard woods, neck contours, radius, and specific dimensions at the the 1st and 12 fret is or can be pertinent info for you in helping with your quest. (not to even mention the type of finish)

I do have a '57 Custom Shop that I refretted and changed the radius from 9.6 to 12" that is a soft V so it is very much identical to an EJ. Big feel difference in the contour diff of those two and the soft V is a very cool one to have around to me.

I have a Jeff Beck body on a partscaster...lol...I wouldn't know except his name is stamped on it.
