X3 VST Scan Stops on Kontakt 5
Hi, I have updated my Kontakt 5 and now when it X3 scans it stops on any Kontakt 5.Dll, even when I uninstalled the updated and went back to the old one it is still stuck on it and won't add the plugin in sonar. I am using X3e on Windows 7 SP1 64 bit Any help would be appreciated, Martin

What exactly do you mean when you say it 'stops' - is there an error? Does it just pause for a while?

Thanks for the replies, Basically what happens is I update Kontakt, it runs fine in standalone mode. If I switch off automatic VST scan and put it into Manual in sonar the updated Kontakt also runs fine, have tried it in several projects. However as soon as I put sonar into Automatic scan the next time I open a project it halts on the Kontakt DLL file. Then when I next go into Sonar Kontakt has been removed, it then halts on the next DLL of Kontakt until all the Kontakt plugins have gone from within sonar. But if sonar doesn't scan for them they run fine! Can I tell Sonar to not scan for Kontakt at all? Martin

Try...
Running chkdsk on your harddrive. Also in Sonar do a vst RESET (not just a rescan).
Cheers..

Thanks for the reply, I have tried a check disk and a full reset and rescan, I did it in my last version of Sonar so it didn't mess the new one up, and it's still exactly the same. The first DLL of a Kontakt and it stops. Here is a screenshot of my VST folder does anything look wrong? Martin " />

you have duplicates of the kontakt 5 DLLs - all the items with (2) in the name - i'd try removing them before rescanning hth

Thanks, Have tried moving them to another folder so there's only KONTAKT 5 KONTAKT 8 KONTAKT 16 The first Kontakt it hits, KONTAKT 16, it just stops again. I presume the chances of it just doing it if I leave it for ages are slim to none? Martin

It can take quite a while to scan the Kontakt dlls. Even minutes. Perhaps you need to wait for the scan to finish

I have seperate installations of sonar on the System so I know it isn't that, Have tried it in X2 and X3. It will run fine as long as I switch off VST Scan, but it just means next time I add plug ins and it goes to scan them it will hang and then remove them

Plenty of people here use Kontakt, myself included, and have not encountered this problem. So that makes it more difficult to find a solution. I don't think it's normal for Kontakt to generate .bak files. I would try moving those out as well. There have been reports of Kontakt hanging if there is a disc in the optical drive. While I think that shouldh't matter, it might be worth checking. My guess is there is something abnormal about the Kontakt installation or update. Forumite scook is very knowledgeable about the registry, plug-in inventories, and those sorts of details. He may see this thread and have an idea of what the problem might be. I don't think a re-install of SONAR would help. It already sees other VSTs, so its scan seems to be working. But apparently, there's something about Kontakt it's not seeing. I did have a Kontakt problem once where an older version did not uninstall completely while updating, and I had to contact NI tech support. They were able to fix the problem with a link to a tool that could completely remove the old version.

To the best of my recollection, The X3 Cakewalk Plug-In Manager version replaced the X2 version, so once you installed X3, both X2 and X3 began using the same version of the Plug-In Manager. I am mentioning this because of your comment about having separate installations of Sonar (X2 and X3). BOTH of those versions now reference the same Plug-In Manager version. Many times, when a plug-in hangs in a VST scan, it is due to that plugin having some kind of error condition - such as not being fully licensed or something like that. The scanning process queries each plugin, to get back information reported by each plugin, and if a particular plugin issues some kind of unexpected response to the plugin manager, then the plugin manager may well not have a clue as to how to proceed, and it hangs. I cannot tell you that the above is definitive, it is just one possibility. 1. After you got rid of the duplicate dll versions of Kontakt 5, did you do a full RESET and RESCAN? I was not sure of when you had done this, (was the reset done prior to getting rid of duplicates or after). 2. The condition you are experiencing is certainly something unique to your computer, because there are large numbers of folks, myself included, that use Kontakt 5 within Sonar, and if there was any kind of wide-spread problems like what you are experiencing, many more folks would have posted as such to this forum. This is actually good news, as it is then something that should be able to be ferreted out and resolved. 3. I am a little confused as to how you came to have the duplicate dll's for Kontakt. It almost seems like you manually moved things around in your computer. Please explain, so I better understand how that condition came to be. 4. Is it possible that Kontakt was excluded in the scan? There is a button to click to show excluded plugins, and I believe if a plugin has been excluded there is some sort of indication there as to why it was excluded. Bob Bone

It is an unusual problem. I don't understand how the BAK and (2) versions of the dlls got in the directory. It makes me wonder how Kontakt was installed. I did see other NI product with a (2). I don't have Komplete (guessing this PC does). I am not sure how it installs. What I would do to get past this issue for now is move all the Kontakt dlls out of the VST scan path and re-run the scan. There may be more issues, so I would initially concentrate on clearing out all problem dlls until the scanner could complete. This will help access the extent problem. At least, this is what I would try first. The scanner completes (if it ever does), post back. There may be more issues yet to be discovered. Edit: I see Bob has jump in. Good thing, he has experience with Komplete installs. Take Bob's advice before mine.

This is correct. All 32bit installs share a 32bit version of vstscan.exe and all 64bit share a 64bit version of vstscan.exe The same is true about the VST inventory in the registry. The same is true with the Plug-in Manager but this is really an issue about the VST scanner. The Plug-in Manager is a separate tool.

When I first installed X3, not very long ago, the startup and VST scan took forever. Then even longer when I did the e update. Changing USB interfaces "solved" the problem. I remember the old days when doing anything with a MIDI device caused Sonar/PA to hang. It seems every audio-related USB device these days has MIDI of some form as well. I would try a total power off restart on the DAW and external gear.

I have never seen this in SONAR, but know this occurs inside Adobe Premiere Pro (identical to the issues stated here). To resolve this in PP, you do in fact need to make a VST blacklist file, and NI products are the most likely ones to be put there. Those three dlls are in my blacklist file but because of Premiere Pro, not SONAR. Here is a link to that post I made previously. Again, I reiterate this is not an issue within SONAR.

To be honest I'm not exactly sure but I had loads of problems years ago with Kontakt in 64bit and I remember moving DLL's around then, this was a long time ago though and it's always run fine with those in. I don't think it's excluding Kontakt as it scans loads of plugins and only stops when it arrives at that one. Is there a way of simply telling Sonar to not bother scanning Kontakt at all? As without scanning the plug in is there and works fine, it's only when scanning that Sonar removes them all. So if I could bypass the scan it would all be fine. Thanks again

Thanks for the plug, scook. Now I HAVE to get the OP issues fixed. :) I completely agree with scook's advice - which would be to try to find a way to get X3 past these VST scan issues, and his approach is a good one - please for the moment, move the Kontakt 5 dll's to a different folder that is not going to end up getting referenced by the Sonar X3 VST scan, and then try to launch Sonar X3 and I would again at that point try doing an explicit Rest, followed by a full Scan. It would be good to get you to where X3 can run, even if Kontakt 5 is temporarily not present, and then we can try to work out what sorts of things are going on with your system that would prevent Kontakt 5 from being scanned. I DO have a question: you indicated that you did launch Kontakt 5 in stand-alone mode, and that it worked. Is it possible you paunched a 32-bit version of it, rather than the 64-bit version of it (Kontakt 5)? I am just grasping here - wondering if perhaps the 64-bit version needs to also be run in stand-alone mode, to complete its authorization process. Might be worth a shot - double-check the properties of the Kontakt 5 and make sure it is running 64-bit in stand alone. Bob Bone

any time Bob I have resorted to moving unruly plug-ins out of the scan path before, only to add them back in after a scan completed. After adding them back they were picked up and everything worked. Does not happen often but it has happened before.

Uninstall Kontakt and remove all dlls. Also download Windows Install Clean Up utility. There reason why those dlls are there they were either moved or they were not over written by the NI installer. I often have problems with the recent NI installers. Often I get an update failed and have to use the Window Install utility.
