Setting up an offline DAW?
I am about to start setting up VSTs and moving audio and MIDI to a new DAW that is offline. I am wondering if I can hook this laptop up to the DAW somehow and just move files. I know I will have to figure some way to install programs from ToonTrack, IK, and others. I have an ASUS N-10 USB connector, I think that maybe I can put the DAW online with it for a short time. I could haul it upstairs where it will eventually go, into a roomful of books, amps, boxes, and other junk I am moving out in the next couple of months, to make the room into my studio. I can easily hook up to an Ethernet cable there. The problem with moving it most places is that the only monitor I have that will work with it is a 27" touchscreen, so it is a question of space and comfort over the long period of time involved. Hooking it up to my laptop and just moving files would certainly be easiest. I have also noticed before in network settings, the question: Do other computers connect to the internet through this computer? Is that an option? Thanks for any ideas. Sonar X3 is already installed. I'll be calling Jim tomorrow, but I thought I'd ask here to see if I get any ideas. Thanks for any help. Julien

Thanks dad. I was just trying to get more exposure in a more travelled forum. Consider me duly chastised! J

Ya Funny how some off topic threads stay in the main Sonar forum forever if certain people start them or the hosts become engaged... Anyhow my DAW is always off line. It's not hard to accomplish. Build the machine, install the OS and give it a few days on line to run updates and activate software that need to be on line. While that's happening you can install all your software and optimize the OS etc. I keep all my software on my data drives so it's pretty easy. I have folders with all my 3rd party plug ins too. Then simply unplug it and put it in the studio. I've done this for a long long time now without issues. All my files are on external hard drives and internal DATA drives. Last build I just pulled the data drive and swapped it over to the new machine, done. If you don't own a 1 TB ( $65) or 2 TB ($90) external drive, get one. Then just dump your entire laptop into it. I use a LAN connection because its faster on line and no dropouts. Wireless cards are a pain for desktops. In a pinch a cheapo USB wireless gizmo will work. At least you can ditch it from the machine easily. That Network setting is for if you set up a server type network, don't do it. It's old school stuff. Most systems use a wireless router with 4 LAN ports. Use the wireless for your laptops and the LAN cables for your desktops. Tricky if a desktop is a long ways from the router but CAT5 cable is cheap houses where made to have holes drilled in them :) You can transfer files from one computer to the next over the network using any router and file sharing. But I would rather have the back ups on the external drive.

This is a Studiocat and Jim pre installed Sonar. I'll call Jim Tomorrow. I don't need to change the OS, do any updates, or anything. I just need to move MIDI and audio over to my audio and samples drives and get third party programs like EZDrummer etc on the C drive. I was hoping there is a way to just connect this laptop where everything already resides and just move it over. If I can connect to my wireless network using the N-10, I'll be in good shape... just a lot of time involved and I'm pushing 63yo so sitting on the floor all day is a non-starter. I'll figure it out, but welcome ANY advice!! J

I still recommend you purchase a back up drive. It's so handy and keeps your work nice and safe. Software needs to be installed from original discs or a downloaded executable file. You can't just move it. But hopefully you have the executable files handy. You can use a USB thumb drive too. 8 Gigs sticks are under $10. I just bought a 64 GB stick for $30. But a 1TB drive at ^ $60 is more GB per $

Thanks, that's a good idea. Today got blown by a rat in my wife's office, a trip to the store, etc, etc... maybe tomorrow. I'll get a DVi cable so I can use a smaller monitor and then it will be simple to hok up to an Ethernet cable and download everything, authorize it, and fast too! J

Some people take their job seriously Mesh. I'm just glad the "hosts" here are not on my homeowners association board, lol! I'd be in trouble!! Really, it's OK... but it does seem a little "nitpicky" sometimes, but I really don't care. I'm just glad I don't have to do it. I'm big on the "spirit of the rule" rather than the "letter of the rule".. in fact I sometimes think rules are made to be broken. I was at the doctor's office last week. There was a faceplate by the door with a knob. Someone had made a sticker that said, "DO NOT TOUCH THIS". Well... sorry, but I couldn't help myself. I touched it, nothing happened. Next time I'm going to turn the knob. If I were a host I'd get in trouble for not writing any tickets. This "hosts" idea was, well... it wasn't my idea but it does offer a great opportunity for a little rebellion without any real consequences. I wonder how hard I would have to push to get a "warning".. hmmm. J BTW, I found an 8G thumb drive in my drawer!

I'd consider a move out of the CH as an upgrade to a nicer part of town. You're more likely to get a becan-free answer here.

Thanks and I am. I am going to get a USB hard drive dock and either one large backup drive or three separate backup drives. Then I plan to clone each drive. I'll probably get another drive for backing up projects, I'll either install it in the tower or use it in the dock but yes, I am cloning and backing up. Thanks for the reminder! J

johnnyV This got moved from the coffee house??!! now that is weird..
No.. actually, I posted it here then posted a truncated version in the CH because I knew the post went here but also knew that the CH gets more traffic, so the "host" applied the rules. IT didn't get moved, the post in the CH just got directed here... which accomplished what I desired, so no harm no foul. It's all good! J
