Have you sent the midi track to a vst instrument?

I would do this... click "b" to open browser.  Insert a new vst instrument.  When dialog box opens... check "MIDI Source" and "First Synth Output" and "Synth Audio Page".  Once loaded.  Drag your midi clip into the new midi track.

See if this video helps. It explains basic MIDI routing which I'm guessing is at the heart of your problem.

Make sure that you have an Audio Track linked to the synth. Simple Instrument Tracks and Audio Tracks play audio, Midi Tracks only house the Midi data.

Is the meter on the bass guitar VST track jumping?

Do you have the Input Echo button on (lit) in the MIDI track?

    Kind regards, Living Room Rocker

Another thing to check, are your notes in the range of your VSTi? For example some "found" midi files may have been designed for a GM module, you may need to transpose them up an octave with some bass guitar VSTis
