Are you into j-pop, kawaii and idols?
Just wondering. I'm a fan of BABYMETAL. And not ashamed too. There are many more bands in Japan who is female fronted. Like doll$boxx.

We all laughed at karaoke when we first heard about it in the early 70's, but today it's ubiquitous. The Japanese have long been ahead of the pop culture curve in many ways. I think it has to do with their propensity to all go nuts en-masse over every new trend. If you think this is bizarre, check this out. Or this one, with audience participation!

I'm not much of a fan of pop, so there's not much difference where it comes from to me. However, I'm a big fan of traditional Chinese and Japanese music. For a while, it was the only thing I listened, as I felt the need to get immersed into something entirely different, to re-learn everything. A Japanese band called Loudness also made quite an impression on my friends and I when we were teenagers. Akira Takazaki quickly became a revered figure for us.

My daughter is a big fan of K-pop and has given me a taste. I have to admit that some of it is pretty good, although some of it is pretty bad. Cat coffee houses and little girls dressed as French maids don't work for me though.

You have a lot of that in the Kawaii style. Try to think of it in the way that they don't dress that way to be sexy, but cute. It is cute on steroids. That's what I like about that. You get sick of the sex in pop culture, but kawaii is a good way of having fun. Just jun.

My best friend - whom I only get to see every few years now - hardly listens to anything but asian pop. I should mention that he listens with his eyes a lot. A few years ago, we were constantly on the hunt for new and obscure dark electro bands and would get together for dinner practically every sunday, have a few bottles and update each other. Last time I went back to Canada and visited him, I was treated to a massive dose of asian pop. I can appreciate a well crafted pop song and a good hook. Nothing I'd listen to at home, but I can dig it.

Good. Yeah its up to taste. But the Asian pop is more diverse than western. Our pop tends to be boring and the stars ain't even good at singing. We some is. But you get what I mean. I love Max Martin tho. (not in a gay way. Lol). For me pop is a hobby, and Metal is what I do. But you get sick of the negativity in Metal and some pop after a while. And then only Jpop can get you out. He he.

I never thought of it that way. It's funny because I never worried much about negative lyrics, I even preferred them, but in recent years, I seem to have developed a new appreciation for KISS as a reaction to it - their lyrics are almost always about self-empowerment and having a good time. Which is the exact opposite of what I am and where I come from as a musician and songwriter. I spent my life trying to express the color black with music. Interestingly enough, KISS recently announced a collaboration with a Japanese Pop Group called Momoiro Clover Z.

I love depressive Music. But in the end you have to balance it out. Real depression ain't fun! Being bipolar, I know. So I use music to help me through. Sometimes I need just darknes, other times that ain't helping at all.
