Project clock constantly changes to audio - using midi -- was set to internal

This problem has returned ( no response to "Record" )..  I know what to look for but all the sudden it is changing every time I record a track, close or reopen a program -   I'm looking all over the place for something triggering this.  One suggested that Sonar was looking for an output routed to the system - I'm running several hardware synths with no problems until now. - All of the I/O's appear to be in order.

I've got addictive drums on track 24 - That track does not seem nearly as "loud" as it was...  is that a clue?

once i come out of record mode ( stop)...  I'm no longer on my internal clock.   I'm back to Audio with that audio icon - bottom left of my now time window keeps lighting back up.

I'm really stumped on where to look.  I've closed the file, opened previous versions that ran fine, restarted the program....
Nothing works... so it's not specifically tied to any file ( version of project file ).. I can go back several "revisions"  ( save often ) that I know worked perfectly -- Till Now.

I'm Still on my original X3 version,  there is a "B" available if I go to upgrade options,  my laptop says there is a "C" I think...

Any ideas on where to look?   Call me dead in the water.

Another hint is my Metronome is drifting away from my project tempo ( or the other way around )
Tempo and Metronome were rock solid until this started.

Thanks
Wayne

What sound card are you using?  If you are having clocking issues, this is where your issues will be

In any case update to X3e. It may or may not fix your particular problem, but it's a much better build.
