Have enough already...
Blasphemy to even ask this...but has anyone hit the limit.. Went and bought the tkdelay few days ago more than anything to support the dev, but needed a new delay less than paying the electric bill. So many vst's. So many vsti's. So many Kontakt libraries. Does it reach a limit where we don't need anything else to create unless we are masking our inability to create with the need to buy the latest plug, so we can create the sound we have always been after. Chasing the perfect sound, not end point creating the sound. Afternoon spent going thru YouTube videos of the ancient masters. These guys had nothing except an amp. The raw talent and inspiration sails way over what I will ever be able to do if they give me every Waves plugin for free. Maybe we need the evolving expanse of effects to get us inspired and creative, but maybe not. Anyone have everything they need, and faced with getting to the bottom line raw truth of actually having to create something? John

Yeah happened to me. You don't need that many plugins. If you've got over 100 (and you probably only really need about half of that or less) you are probably mostly using the presets rather than learning to use them. Buy some CD's instead maybe...
I love getting rid of plugins I don't need now.

In the same boat here... Yes I had everything I Needed long ago but still in search of the Magic vst and still spending money for things I already have plenty of. I'll never be able to learn everything I have now and still have time to play or write. Not going to purchase anything else until X4 maybe...

Just did a new install on my new laptop. after recent purchases pushed my last pc to the edge, being more sample based than before. I went for a restricted option. I have 7 kits in AD2, so decided to focus on that, I can add session drummer later, but at the moment, I have enough choice of drums. I have A.Keys Trio, and the full AAS set up. I have enough plugs here keyboard sounds. and interesting textures. I couldn't decide on Rapture or Dimension Pro, do I need both, do I need either. My main use for it would be for bass guitar as I couldn't get enough reassurance to plunge for amplesounds. But then maybe I just focus on mastering AAS's Ultra Analog for bass until the dust has settled on this laptop and something more revealing pushes my bass guitar option. The result of all this, I now have no Cakewalk Instruments on my laptop, just XLN and AAS, I have a few real instruments to work on too. I can always add these in later. Maybe just rapture as I have some J-Bass Samples if I haven't found another option for bass guitar. TH2 was the only guitar plug I wanted, but XLN have me 2 peavey plugs, II wish I didn't download, as it became time consuming and I probably won't use. I should focus on just the TH2 and getting a sound I am happy, well and learning to actually play the guitar, than be distracted by messing with the sound too much.

So very true, too many plugins, too many distractions. This probably belongs in the philosophy forum, and may yet get moved there. There are billions of stars in the plugin universe, and I used to be overwhelmed by just how many plugin makers there are on the internet, coming out with new gems daily. I've downloaded demos, and deleted more bad plugins than I can remember. Now I'm really into upgrading my plugins, so I try to research them in depth and replace existing plugins with better plugins. Usually the better plugins cost more money, and they are far more powerful in features and work flow. As far as VST plugins, you only really need one of every type, so get the best if you can afford it. There is one of every type in Sonar X3e (many free with purchase) and you can make great music using them without downloading anything. The trick is to learn how and when to use them properly. For VSTi's there's nothing like great sounds and samples to make the music in your head sound the same coming out of the speakers. I'm reminded that some of my favourite music ever created was by a deaf guy with no plugins . . . but then again he didn't have all the distractions we have in the age of information.

Yes and no. Yeah you can get everything you really need from the built in stuff if you know how to use it. IMO the Sonitus VSTs are still some of the best utilities that come with Sonar but you need a bit more than that. You can produce just about anything with the stuff that comes with Sonar DimPro, Z3TA+, Pro-Chan, etc but it's not going to get you all the way there. The problem is you have to try a lot of stuff to find what works best. I've been using Pro-Q2 and SSL 4000 channels on just about everything these days but I had to try dozens of different plugins to finally settle on them. For some parts I still find myself trying a lot of stuff until I get what I want, I'm glad I've got the choice available.

Trying to identify the root of this disease. Got Sigmund delay awhile back. Very fine delay unit. Brain dead going thru time, used it for a week or so, convinced that it was the best thing out the gate. Present time, recoiling from delay poverty over what I've spent on hi end delays, subsequently forgetting what I even bought. Wife would kill me if she knew what I've spent on echo boxes. Symptom of the GAS disease here is that got an email from the guys that a new and improved Sigmund is coming soon. Every hair of what's left stands on end in slobbering anticipation. Can't wait for the upgrade to a vst I forgot I have. Obviously the key to my next platinum disc. Something wrong here I can't quite figure out yet. Hope not, but feel some others are in the same boat. Maybe need to start an AA forum for GAS addicts so we can share the affliction and ultimately overcome. The road to recovery will be difficult. Can start with the AA principle, avoiding one plugin, one day at a time. John

Surprised that you posted this. I was contemplating getting EZMixer with six expansion packs of your choice for what I think is a great price. But after listening to the examples I realized I just spent a bunch on the IK group buy (and three Keeley pedals) and I can get sounds like that on my own, if I work for it. Then it hit me, do I want to write, or just mix/master? I wanna write. Songs.

The key to my GAS recovery is less disposable income. Now, I'm starting to look for the things that will expand my songwriting and sound pallet. Not EQs, delays etc. Songwritng=EZKeys MIDI packs (because I'm not a keyboard/piano player) or any other tool of this type Song Pallet=Sound libraries. I have so much that it must be unique enough for me to say "For $19, I might just use that in a song or two"

When I went to X3 I did a major plug-in cull. I'm happier for it. I've probably bought five new plugins in the last year, and find that I generally use only the same 12-15. To quote Bapu (above): "Now, I'm starting to look for the things that will expand my songwriting and sound pallet. Not EQs, delays etc." Exactly. I feel free!!
