Strange midi controller problem with X3e Producer

I'm using X3e on a laptop running Windows 8.  I'm trying to use an Alesis DM8 drumkit to control Addictive Drums 2.  Sonar and Windows both recognize the midi device, and I have it enabled in Preferences and it shows up as the input on my midi track, the output of which is sent to AD2, but it will not respond to any hits on the drumkit.  I tried it using VST host, and everything works as it should.  My routing inside of Sonar is set correctly.  I can get output from AD2 using the mouse to hit on kit pieces.  Can anyone steer me in the right direction to fix this?  I have restarted Sonar several times, rebooted Windows, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers from the DM8, but nothing seems to work.
I have had it working in Sonar X3e before, with the same settings.
Thanks.

You can check that all routes are ok. Add MIDI track (not connected to any synth), select DM8 as the input, arm the track  and start recording. Slowly hit your DM8 pieces in predictable order. Stop recording.

Is something recorded into the track? If not, MIDI information is not reaching SONAR.

If you see something is recorded. Take some easy sample from AD2 and drug it to the (AD2) track. Open this MIDI clip and just recorded clip in piano roll/staff view/even list (whatever you feel comfort with) and compare the notes.

If you see they do not intersect, drum mapping is set incorrectly (that can be done many different ways).

Thanks for the reply azslow.  It didn't record anything into the midi track, but I decided to do a complete shutdown of everything and start over, and now it's working.  I still don't know why Sonar wouldn't receive any midi data.  I sometimes use this kit for live gigs, so I think I'll just stick with VST Host for the live work.  Sonar doesn't seem to like this laptop.  It works fine on my desktop, but it always seems to need to be restarted on the laptop.
