Superman Curl - REMIX
I've taken fellow Sonarians' advice and remixed this song. I went through each track an learned a lot. I re-cut the lead vocal too. The new mix is the same link. https://soundcloud.com/jmasno5/superman-curl

A radio ready hit. Clever lyrics. Great job by Karen on harmonies. To my admittedly untrustworthy ears, I'd like to hear the entire song mixed a little brighter, bring the vox forward a bit. Good work.

Thank you and I like your opinion. This song is new territory for me in its thick guitar arrangement. I may need to rethink the sweet-spot for the VOX. A lot of my tunes have more space to work with. This one, not too much.

First off... as soon as Soundcloud opened and I saw the background image I had to chuckle. I agree with Mark - good writing and arrangement, and well performed. Mix-wise I'm not sure if the entire thing needs to be brighter, but I'd at least start with the lead vocals - they sound a bit too "round" to me ears for this type of song. It's definitely worth going back in to make some tweaks IMHO!

Thank you Lynn, Mark, Steve and Gus. Lynn, I'm glad it sounded good there but there must be a tweak somewhere. I spent some time mixing this in mono. As you know all of the center is louder. I think when I went back to stereo I was fooled as to the presence of the main vocal. The tweak might be as simple as lowering the drum room fader. We'll see...

ok...I'll avoid all the techy stuff and just say this is a fun, energetic song that needs the vox to come into the spot light....it just really sits way back in the mix...in fact behind everything else in the mix...to include guitars and kit... keep working it but if you hit a brick wall I can give you an alt mix (no cost just for fun) just email me at thepogue at yahoo dot com great tune!

John, this mix sounds better to me. Vocals are more upfront and clearer. the important thing, though is that this is just a terrific song. Reminds me a little of early XTC. Well done

well...its much better (Vox wise) but I'd still come up a bit more as I still feel the vox site behind the guitars and kit in the mix..but yes you are heading in the right direction...dont be shy on the vox..you got a great voice so push it man...push it!!

Thanks! I'll listen to it in more places. I mix at low volumes. When I have the fader low I hear the vocal, snare and bass perfectly. I think my fear is, if I bring up the vox it may get in the way of the ever growing aggressiveness of the guitars. The guitars are the key to the buildup of energy. It's all taste but I respect what you're saying. That's why mixing is art.

Thanks Daryl. I think quirky is a good description. It certainly explains some of my other work. If you checkout some of my tunes at https://soundcloud.com/jmasno5 you'll hear songs about a grade school kid in love with his teacher, a guy who was drugged and robbed on a date, the resistance to give in to mental anguish, and co-workers who despise a boss who is in place because of nepotism.

Radio ready pop tune. 70s type groove. Great vocal work. I think the mix is spot on. I don't know if I caught your instrumentation, but it sounds great. John B.

Just had a listen to the remix - definitely better. The lead vocal is crisper and more present while the overall mix is still nice and wide. I think for a "pop" mix the vocal could probably sit just a little higher in the mix, but with that said I can hear everything you're singing. Works for me.

Yes, this does sound far better than the 1st submitted mix. I think the vox are sitting pretty well. Although, you could even raise them just a little if you felt the need to do so. Really good song :)

I mix at low volumes.
That's working for you, because listening at low volume I can pick out drums, bass and guitars nicely and the vocals are riding over the top well. Good song too!
