The Who do bluegrass!

Pete Townshend WISHES he’d thought of this. Years ago, a band I was with did a country version of this. I changed the time from 4 to 3, changed some chord voicings and instruments, and came up with this. In the intro I try to suggest Pete's synth noodling without duplicating it.

I do guitar, mandolin, banjo and vocals. Bass is by Rick Duncan. Usually I play my own bass tracks, but I thought this tune deserved a REAL bass player. 25 years ago, I’d been in several incarnations of Rick’s band (see above). We haven’t seen each other since then, but the miracle of Facebook threw us together again quite by chance.

No drums. I gave up trying to get Jammer to do a decent drum track in 3. Everything came out oom-PAH-PAH, really cheesy, so I dispensed with drums altogether.

I hope y'all like it. I had a ton of fun recording it.

My shotgun sings a pretty sweet song? But my shoulder is not a fan of that music. I liked this, The banjo and mando didn't seem quite in tune, they were close? We need the video! With the windmill strumming on the mandolin :-) I like rock songs done in bluegrass.

Mark, that means a lot coming from a guy whose work I so admire. Check out my Selfie; you influenced my lead guitar tone on that one.

Jab, about the banjo: well, I suck, it's that simple. The track isn't clear because I use my fingers, not picks. Just can't feel the strings with picks on, so I'm picking too hard to try to project better.

Thanks for the White Room links, I loved those arrangements!

It really works surprisingly well!   Love all the little runs between the vocal lines.    If Pete only knew...

    Hi Mark ,
I'm glad you did this …it is pretty cool take on the song and it was a good listen …
I figured I might share this w you since you mentioned ditching the drum plug / vst drums on your tune,
I'm so burnt out on learning synths , DAW's , drum machines , and plugs that I have actually rebelled and stepped back and away from all that stuff for a while …
I'm much happier when I'm playing real instruments …after hearing this tune I think I'm gonna go dust off my mandolin .

Thanks, Kenny. Sometimes I dread having to compose a drum track when all I really want to do is pick up my guitar and play.............

It sounds a bit like Irish folk music. The synthesizers don't really fit the genre. However, I reckon I'd like to see the live performance where you kick over the still and smash your banjo to bits.
