Drum maps, specifically for a Trigger Finger Pro...

Hi, it's me again

I finally feel I'm off an running now.  Everything's finally working and I'm back to writing and laying down some scratch tracks and every little idea that pops into my head.  Anyhow... guess who got a shiny Trigger Finger Pro for christmas   ok, you don't have to guess, it's me! yay!

ok, so, I'm going to make my own drum map eventually (in fact I've already started, but it's sorta confusing), I just want to play with it for a bit. I had a quick search here and on the web and couldn't find anything... just want to plug in a quick map for now that makes a bit more sense than the default as everything's in a jumble.

Any clues where I can find something like this?

Thanks guys!

Drum maps in SONAR map the MIDI input notes to specific sounds in a synth or sample library.

A hardware controller can also have maps of sorts. They are usually loaded through the hardware controls or sometimes through a small software utility.

The pads on your controller each trigger some specific MIDI note. You can set up the the controller with a custom layout so that a pad triggers a particular note, which you associate with some particular sound like Kick, Snare etc.

The Drum map in SONAR will take a MIDI note that you play, for example Key #36, a.k.a. C1, and map that to the Kick drum sample.

If your drum synth or sampler doesn't use Key #36, a.k.a. C1, for the kick drum then you can use a Drum Map inside SONAR to map a MIDI input such as Key #36, a.k.a. C1, to the slot where the kick drum is in the synth or sampler you are using.

To make a long story short: SONAR's Drum Maps are for after the MIDI info gets into your computer and they are specific to the sound set you are using on any given occasion.

The system used by the hardware to map its pads to its MIDI outputs may also be thought of as a map and the hardware's documentation will explain how to select or modify that sort of mapping.

Here is what I do to create a drum map and avoid being too technical about it.  I will create a MIDI track (doesn't have to have an associated audio track or even routed to a virtual/out board instrument.   I will systematically record each pad, control, switch, fader, etc.  I will then open the Event View for that MIDI track to reference the notes/messages for each controller (pad or otherwise) to create a new MIDI/Drum map.  So, I will then create a new Drum map from the MIDI track or use the Preferences route.  Now starts the tedious part of mapping each note (or desired notes) to each control on my controller.  You will find yourself going back and forth between the Event View and the Drum map until all controls/notes are assigned as desired.

This is the most simple way to described my process (copy and paste, etc.), but there is the more intellectual method which I dare not go into because it is more complicated than need be.

A hardware controller can also have maps of sorts. They are usually loaded through the hardware controls or sometimes through a small software utility.

However, as Mike eluded to, you most likely can find a drum map for the Trigger and SONAR or popular drum programs like DKFH or BFD or AD or... to work together.  You may have to modify that drum map a bit to suit your needs.

I certainly hope this helps you.  Hit back it you need more info or suggestions.

    Kind regards,

P.S.  I may not be able to respond today due to the holiday and such.  I am confident someone out there will be able to assist nonetheless.

ok, thanks, makes good sense.  I'll try your process Living Room Rocker, seems easy enough.

    much appreciated :)

Reading about the the trigger finger pro, it seems as if it has a mapping utility named "Arsenal" which you can use so that you can run synths and samplers in stand alone mode as well as with a DAW.

IT seems like the trigger will work in General MIDI mode without Arsenal and that you can run Arsenal maps and use the Arsenal app to make custom maps.

If you want to get the most out of the Drum Trigger Pro you can go to M-Audio support and get the Arsenal Manual as well as many pre made Arsenal maps for specific synths and samplers.

    Thanks Mike :)

I was doing just that tonite, between sonar and my vsts and this new drum machine it's going to take some getting used to!  I have lots of ideas 'how' I want things to be, just translating that into making it happen is going to take some doing lol
