Instrument definition file for Roland EXP-30

I just updated to Sonar X3 from Sonar 8.5. Until now, I had not been able to find IDF's for the Roland. However, when I simply chose the midi channel and midi output on my 4x4 MIDIsport interface, I was always able to get the XP30 to play (and respond to MIDI data.) I would simply change patches on the actual XP-30 synth, rather than thru the computer. However, since converting to X3, I cannot get my XP-30 to play or respond. Interestingly, I cannot even get the XP-30 to play while local control is turned on----unless I change the mode from Patch to Performance.
Perhaps I'm giving too much info. I would think that if I can find the IDF's, I might be able to get the XP-30 to respond. It's amazing that it seems so difficult to find any good sources as I have tried to search for this.

    I think you will find that the XP30 can use a GM patch list. You will need to set it up in Sonar to use it.

    When I opened up X3, the configurations that I had been using in Sonar  8.5 were already in place. Meaning that I already had my output D, channel 4 set to a Roland GM patch list. Unfortuneatley, while for some reason this was working previously, it is not working while using X3. Perhaps, there is some other default that is being used that is blocking this function.

    I used to have Instrument Definitions for my Tyros 2, JV-1080 with four expansion cards, and my Kurzweil PC2R with Orchestra Expansion.
     
    Somehow that all got lost and it is frustrating.  1-I can find the INS for some things, but not others; 2-I don't know how to add the expansion cards in; and, 3-the process always seems confusing even if you have the files.
     
    I realize I am not helping--sorry.  I just wanted to add my sorrow to your post.

    Have a look at this video and see if that helps. Go to chapter 8 in the playlist. That explains how INS files are assigned and written should you need to.
     
    I suspect the non-playing issue though might be something different. Check that the "Input Echo" widget is lit. You'll find that next to the "Record" widget in the track header. Without that you won't hear anything, that's assuming of course that the output is already assigned to the Roland, and the input is either getting live input from a controller or there's MIDI data on the track.

    I watched the video that FastBikerBoy suggested. It was very helpful. Who knew that the instrument definitions that I have been combing the internet for were so easily accessible right thru the importing of instrument files within Sonar X3!
    I then searched my project, and it is possible that I had another MIDI track set to the same output. I think it was conflicting with the MIDI track I was working with. When I got rid of this other MIDI track, which I wasn't using anyway, my problem has gone away. So thank you for this advice.
    I must say that hitting "input echo" has no effect on what I hear. I find it is usually in the off position, but even when I click it on, I hear the same thing. In other words, whether it is on or off, I still hear my instruments. However, as I have said, my problem is solved---so thanks again.
