I'll be interested in hearing the remix. You're a good mixer which helps for learning new monitors.

The song is really cool. Well done!!!

Bat, another cool song and great playing! Highs and mids sound great.  Kick is thumpin' but the bass is kinda lost on my side's speakers.  Seems like you have more potential bottom end energy than what I heard.
Speaking of low end, let me know how my Burnin Coals song sounds on your system.  It seems pretty decent thru speakers and in cans for me. It could help me better dial in your system if it seems over/under on your system.

The drums are find but I wish they had more of a Zeplin ambience to them for your stuff.  The tight/compressed sound is modern sounding but I long for room and ambiance.  Just a thought.

Your creativity is so high that if your had been a star in the 80's, I would not doubt it at all.
    Happy New Year!

    thanks pima....
i've always wanted to re-do this one,
i'm putting down new rhythm guitars that are not so heavy, saturation sounding wise....
    and beef up the drums....
i've just gotta decide how to process them room-wise, because the drum tracks are bone dry.
no real room mics, so it's an artificial mix.

What I started doing with drums is:

Room mics - I make them bigger by compressing them with a  long release time. I'll over-compress them until it's just too much then back it off a bit.

Overheads - I keep them tight with minimal compression. The same goes for the rest of the individual kit pieces.

I insert a send to all drum tracks except the bass drum and they go to a reverb buss. I roll off the low end on the reverb buss up to 200hz depending. I use the reverb's fader to adjust the amount to mix in.

I use Addictive Drums 2. I would like to know what you do.

    Hey Bat!

Cool tune! I'd like to hear a little more room on the drums as well, rather than just making them louder. Guitars are really well done, though the panned rhythm guitars almost overwhelm the vocal in spots. Bass is lacking a little on the bottom, but I like the way you EQ'd it.

    thanks for listening,
it seems i have a lot more power to mix now,
than i did back when i did this song with a roland VS1880.....
i should be able to really sharpen up these mixes once i dive into it.....
and the bass, yep, that and the drums, will get a thorough re-do

i also love that big room drum sound,
yet get panned from time to time for using 'dated' sounds...

i can go either way on this one,
    gotta decide which way.

    PIMA,
    these are live drums....
they were recorded at another facility by another engineer...
so, I was using them pretty much raw, in the original mix.

now, i'll process the crap out of them!!
    LOL
just to bring them more forward, and give them more power.

to get into a full rundown of how i NOW process drums would be too lengthy...

    but in short,
i eq them for maximum impact,
    get rid of the harsh,
    compress and limit as required,
do parallel compression if called for,
and if i do use reverb for fake drum room sound,
i roll off at 500 hz and 8-10k, depending on the sound of the kit.

i use 24 bit raw Superior Drummer tracks for programmed drums.

Excellent stuff as always Bats. Yep, those drums need to be BIGGER . Love the acoustic sound and the harmony lead guitars. Great handful of riffs too. Track actually reminds me a little of a short-lived band called The Darkness, had a couple of hits over here.

    thank you for reviewing, dan....
my overheads have very little room sound in them....
so i'll be on the hunt for a really good reverb that i can parallel compress and mix in on.......
i'll probably re-record the rhythm guitars,
and find a girthier tone to sit below the vocal range,
that might help them sit better and still be loud.

    but styx?
hm, didn't they have lots of synthesizers and hammond b3 sounds?
i guess maybe some of the early tommy shaw stuff?

Yeah, I certainly prefer your guitar driven productions. It was the song itself that reminded me of old Styx not the recording. It was meant as a compliment either way.

Love the transparency of the guitars in the intro, and the width and fatness after.   Really really good.   And the guitar parts themselves are very cool.   Vocals and harmonies sound great and like mentioned above the mids and highs come across nicely.    Just need a little bottom to balance things out and this could be smokin'.

Oh, and the lines towards the end were great.
