import midi tempo ?

I'm working on converting some sonar 5 files to x3.   I know I can open the cwp file, but in certain cases I'm trying to import individual midi instrument lines via midi type1 export from sonar 5.    If I simply "open" the .mid file, the tempo changes are represented correctly, but if I use the midi import function, to put a line into a specific midi track, the tempo changes are completely ignored.    Any solution using midi import?  I should add that it works to open the midi file, use 'copy special' to copy the tempo changes, then go to the destination project and paste the tempo.   Hoping for a shorter path!
