Some help with a difference recording vocals between X2 and X3 please.

Hi,

I know, I'm a version behind, still getting over some things :).

Anyway, I have recently been working in X3 and there seems to be a change over X2 when recording a Vocal line and then editing it on the fly.

Let me explain. I like to record my vocals maybe one, or sometimes 2 lines of a song at a time to ensure I really nail the line.

Now in X2, I could sing a line, fluff it, delete it, re-record till happy then, trim that clip back, enable record, but drag playback to the middle of the previous good clip so as to give me a cue and get me in key, then sing the next lines, trim and so on...

In X3 as soon as I trim back the clip I'm happy with and drag playback to the middle of that clip and start recording the next, the good clip goes silent from the point I dragged back to, giving me no cue and it's doing my head in. Not only that if you record an entire chorus like that, it goes silent at every point I rerecorded from...X2 does not do this!

I'm sure it's just a setting somewhere, but for the love of it, I cannot find it. I'd hate to have to record all vocals in X2 and import into 3 just to circumnavigate this.

Hope you can all help!

Thanks

Good things to all.

Right click on record button in main toolbar - under recording mode select sound on sound (probably set as comping at the moment)

Sounds like something to do with the recording mode, ie. Sound-On-Sound vs Comping vs Overwrite mode. If you're a long-time Sonar user you probably are used to working in Sound-on-Sound mode. Switch it via the mini-menu on the record button on the control bar, or in the preferences.

Yes I am a *very*, very long time user so it just hadn't occured to me quite how the change had happened. It's just the way I like to work. I find I get a far more consistent vocal take that way.

Without getting to "artsy" about it, I don't like comping on vocals, as I find personally that using my method my vocal approach to the song and sound remains consistent. I always have the last line as a reference and remain in the zone. Let's assume I'm working on an intimate song.

If I comp, I tend to go away between takes, get a drink, loo, maybe the phone rings and it's the mother in law and by the time you come to take 2, well, you don't sound the same, your emotional state may be changed, you sound a bit different...Which can sometimes be a good thing, it might improve! I find my consistency changes...

That's not to discount the huge benfits of comping, say to record and then build an epic guitair solo or try out different harmony lines...I guess I'm just too set in my ways :)

Anyways thanks for the help, I can carry on now without X3 changing my emotional state mid song! :)

Thanks
