Another newbie question - Vocal takes

Thanks for the replies to yesterday's snare drum issue....all made a lot of sense.
 
My singer is coming round this week to do the "proper" takes, as opposed to the test ones we've done so far to enable me to set up equipment, test out ideas, learn from my mistakes etc...
 
I'm using Sonar 8.5.   I know that if you loop record, the different takes from the recording will go into separate track lanes if you want them to (if track lanes is the correct term?) However, what if you don't want to keep it on a loop, because you want to stop and do something else? Basically, if you want to come back and do another two takes of verse 1 later, but you'd like them to end up in separate lanes of the same track you've previously recorded vocals on. Is this possible in 8.5, and if so, how? I can't find any info in the manual, or in Sonar Power

8.5 didn't have lanes. You just create a bunch of tracks and use those, Then cut and paste the best parts of each take to make a "best of"  track.
 
Or when working alone I would simply punch in manually or using automation. 
 

But 8.5 has layers. You can do loop recording in separate layers on the same track.
I'm not on my music machine now, and it's been forewer since I recorded layers, so I simply don't
remember how it is with continuing the recording later in order to create new layers.
 
I assume you have tried a second  recording session onto a track with existing layers (with layers visible) and what happened? Did the existing layers get overwritten even in "sound on sound" record mode?

It's been a while since I used 8.5 but yes it is possible. As Kalle said you will get separate layers in the same track if you use "Sound on Sound" recording mode. Set that in preferences.
 
IIRC correctly you'll hear the existing material in that track though. To silence that just mute the track. Maybe a current 8.5 user will be able to confirm/correct that info.

Yes same for me, I just have had too many scary things happen when using lanes and layers so I've avoided them. 
As I said  when recording myself I just work with the one track and punch in and out either manually using my wireless keyboard. For guitar I use the automated punch in/out. 
 
When working with a client, I have created a vocal track with all the plug ins and sends on it and I'll clone it 4 or 5 times. I then have them sing through a few times using each of these tracks in turn until we both are happy. I will steal better parts from the other takes after we choose the best one. We might manually punch in too. 
One other technique I use is to crop each track into parts as they are recording by toggling the "R" on/off as we go.  This leaves you with each verse/chorus/part in a nice little package ready to move around without splitting. 
 
The unwanted tracks are either deleted or archived. 
 
As is always stated here, we each have our way of working and as long as it works for you, it is the correct way.
