Need help with a basic function that should be working, but is not, on my Sonar X2 program
Very much (I hate the word "desperately") in need of help as to why on earth my Cakewalk Sound Center is refusing to work on my Sonar X2 program. I open X2, start a project, etc., etc., insert the Center (whereupon, a new track appears, saying "Cakewalk Sound Center"), click on the MIDI (?) icon, watch the Sound Center window/box come up, click on the sound fields, press the digital keys, and... all I get is a rude, video-game beep-bleep-bloop noise. If I pick strings, I get beep-bleep-bloop. Piano? Beep-bleep-bloop. Brass? Beep-beep-bloop. And so on. Do I have to pay an extra fee to get the sounds to work, or something? I'm at an utter loss. None of the help screens are helping, and a Youtube video insists the Sound Center is "simple." And, by cracky, it works on the video!! So it must be simple. Can I trade my copy for the one used in the video? I'm not good at digging out the details of my computer--let me know what page to go to and I'll gladly relate the specs. New Lenovo tower, a ThinkCentre M83. ("Small Form Factor"--whatever on earth that means. Some order detail?) Okay, wait.... Windows 7, 3.40 GHz processor, RAM=4.0 GB, 64-bit OS. Hellllllppp!!!!!! Lee

I am guessing SONAR is using the internal PC sound chip and the mixing latency is set too low. Try increasing the buffer size in the mixing latency section in Preferences > Audio > Driver Settings

I'm using a Roland Duo-Capture mk2. Wouldn't it be using that instead of the sound card? Just asking--I don't know!

I drastically increased the buffer size--no change.

Since you mention having a dedicated interface, SONAR may be using it. Depends on how you set up SONAR. The device you are using is defined in Preferences > Audio > Devices. The record mode is defined in Preferences > Audio > Playback and Recording. If you are running ASIO mode, the buffer size is controlled by software supplied by Roland. If you are running WDM mode, use the buffer size slider in Preferences > Audio > Driver Settings. If you are running MME mode, change to ASIO or WDM.

It's WMD mode, and I have the driver slide nearly all the way to the right! No change. Can I switch it to MME mode?

MME would probably perform worse. Doesn't it have an ASIO driver?

Yes, but don't I want it to be using the Roland?

I should mention that the sound is great. No problems whatsoever before trying to use the Sound Center.

Select a Type, a Subtype, and then double-click a Program to load it. If you only single-click types, subtypes and programs, the default program will remain loaded, which indeed sounds like bleep, bleep bloop.

I guess it could be the program selection.

And... that solved it! Thanks!! Um.... Have I done any damage by changing the driver to ASIO and increasing the buffer size? Doesn't seem to affect the audio. Does the ASIO=the PC's sound card, and isn't the Duo Capture bypassing it?

Oh, ASIO is an interface. Between the soundcard and my Duo Capture. Is that right?

ASIO is a type of driver commonly used by more advanced interfaces, and is preferred for the Duo Capture. Choosing ASIO should ensure SONAR uses only your Duo Capture since onboard sound won't likely have an ASIO driver. I have a Duo Capture on a Core2 Duo laptop, and it runs well with the buffer at 160 samples.

Cool! Many thanks for your help. Meanwhile, another reply showed up on my email but not here. It asked if the ASIO driver is working well, and, yes it is. Now to adjust the buffer....

ASIO is the driver software being used by SONAR to communicate with the Duo Capture. Your sound card is no longer seen by SONAR when using the Duo Capture ASIO driver.

And it seems that, after I picked the ASIO driver, the buffer size is set. (It's not allowing me to adjust it.) Meaning it's going with the Roland's preset value? All the sounds are working. The trumpets sound a bit like an accordion, but they beat the patch on my synth, which is more of a comb-and-toilet-paper sound. Awesome! Thanks to all for your help! Lee

The buffer size is set by software supplied by Roland. Usually there is a client loaded in the notification area which handles the interface set up.
