Pattern Tool?
Looks nice, but... how about Ctrl+D instead? Honestly, I don't see myself using this functionality in the next million years. Note to self, don't accidentally invoke the pattern tool. The video presentation is way too much data dump and not enough "what does it sound like?". Say I've got a killer drum pattern that I want to copy, I can already groove clip it or copy and paste it. I suppose I could use the pattern tool but what if I miss the snap? Everything is going to be off. Meh! Ctrl+D would have been a lot more useful.

CTRL+D is not bound to anything in X3, maybe it won't be bound in the new SONAR either. I suppose it could be bound to any available function. Does the key sequence have a special meaning?

Yes, in every other DAW, Ctrl+D is duplicate. (measure, clip, note, selection, etc)

I do not believe that function exists in SONAR but I recall another thread about this question. Is this just a repeat of that request?

No, it's more a critique of wasted effort.

So you do not want a duplicate function or the pattern tool?

Duplicate would be great, pattern tool, not so much. The pattern tool doesn't fill the gap.

I'm sure the pattern tool is a wonderful thing, worthy of much adulation, but it's not closing any functionality gaps. The kids aren't going to play here unless they can play the way they're used to. The pattern tool is not in anyone's toolbox, Ctrl+D is everywhere. The only way Sonar is going to attract and keep new users is to provide the functionality they have come to expect. The stubborn refusal to support the industry standard DUPLICATE functionality just seems silly.

You don't need that command in Sonar. Just convert your clip to a groove-clip (ctrl+L) and drag it out to "duplicate" it all you want.. :)

Yes, groove clips have been mentioned before. This is a very narrow request for a specific key mapping and function.

No, duplicate doesn't work that way. Groove clip looping can't 'duplicate' the functionality. It's not currently possible to emulate the behavior correctly in Sonar.

Yeah. We've got the "paste special"-function though which I'd guess kind of works as the "duplicate"-command. Here you can choose how many "repetitions" you want of what you're about to paste. Just bind a shortcut to it and you've got your duplicate-command, Tom.

What functionality are you talking about that Groove Clips doesn't include?

One scenario: A single measure 4 notes of 1/8 note duration one on each beat. C D G C Select all notes in the measure, snap set to 1/8th notes Hit Ctrl+D Result: Notes are duplicated on 1/8th note boundaries. Instead of: C D G C You get: CCDDGGCC Conversely, if you set the snap to 1 measure you get C D G C C D G C It's not the same.

Ah alright, I understand.. Your example could be solved in Sonar just by selecting all notes (or selecting the whole MIDI-clip in track view) and dragging them 1/8 to the right while holding the ctrl-key, though. Or just copying the notes and then placing the now-time where you want to paste it (1/8 to the right) and paste. Implementing a whole new command for things that can be solve just as easily in another way seems like a waste of time to me. Maybe I'm not grasping everything you could do with the duplicate tool in other DAWs though. If there's a specific thing you can't figure out how to do in Sonar, just ask here.. and if what you're trying to do isn't possible, just make a feature request here http://forum.cakewalk.com/Features-Ideas-f76.aspx With these new continuous updates I'm guessing Cakewalk will keep themselves updated on what's going on in the feature request forum to make everyone happy.. :) The new pattern tool can probably be used for stuff like this as well. With this you can even change the pitch of the new pattern you're about to make which's awesome :)

My thoughts are the same as Loptec.
I do think quick painting of patterns will be useful and creative.
Could be interesting with Snap to key as well.

Is it me, or is this pretty much the reintroduction of the Pattern Brush that disappeared around the time the X series came out? I don't remember anyone saying "Hey! What happened to the pattern brush?" 😉 I can see it having some use, just like any tool in the box - it's there if the job calls for it! Brian

IIRC the pattern brush was the thing that actually was removed when X1 came out as opposed to the supposed 'hundreds' of functions that had been removed.

No completely. :) Ctrl+D is one key stroke, the closest you can get is copy and paste and you still have to move the now marker. If you duplicate multiple times, new copies are appended at the next snap boundary then the next. You don't have to touch the mouse or change the now marker. It's a lot faster.
