It can be used to make adjustments to overall levels after automation has been written. i.e. offset the current values. For a video explanation go to this video. Offset is explained in video 49/50 (select from the playist) at around 9:05 into it.

One way of using offset is this:
  • Let's say you've created a mix with lots of volume automation on a track.
  • After a while you feel the overall volume of this track is to loud..
  • Now, instead of selecting the automation and trying to mix by dragging the lane up and down, you can type 'o' and decrease the volume with the actual fader, just as you normally would do when mixing.
  • The automation you've created (in automation mode) will still be in effect, but with the overall changed volume you set in offset mode.
Also, check out Karl's video of course, for a more in depth explanation of what it's all about :)
(Great video Karl! I didn't know about the vertical snap function for nodes before! That's awesome!!)

That's good to know, previously I've always highlighted the entire audio in the track then dragged the whole envelope in the automation lane to get to the same result
