Box or Download; that is the question.

Will the boxed version only have disks in it or will it also come with a paper manual?

Pretty sure hard copy manuals were discontinued years ago. Wasn't there a release where Cakewalk offered the manual as a separate purchase (8?). I believe that was the end of the hard copy. Since the X series, I have purchased downloads.

The manual is usually a mega sized download itself. Much bigger than the in program Help. There's also the online Help page, though I doubt the new Sonar Help page is up yet.

By the time the reference guide is available it will be in the order of 1800 pages. Once a manual gets that large electronic format makes it easier for searching as terminology is not always obvious.
I always keep it on an iPad.

BTW I haven't found the ref guide yet. Maybe it's gone. Anyone know? Or have I missed it?

Usually the reference guide is compiled shortly after the release. Expect it will be here http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/By-Product/SONAR%20Platinum in a week or so.

Boxed version comes with a download card. The idea here is to always deliver the latest version. We will be making DVDs available for a nominal fee at Cakewalk.com later this month.

Interesting. So the difference between ordering a download from say Sweetwater and ordering a boxed version is that with the boxed version you have to pay for shipping the box, wait a little longer for it to be shipped, and find out there is no DVD just a card to download the software as if you ordered a download to begin with or am I missing something?
I didn't order the boxed version anyway since it's not like X2 or X3. Your DVD is obsolete in a month with the new model.

From another thread I see you are right Wally. I really AM missing something. I do feel bad for those who bought the box thinking it would have DVDs. So much confuuusssiion, these days.

    No DVD's in the box?

Not good news for people with an ancient internet connection. They might have to hitch up the horse and buggy and ride in to the big city to hook up to their cousin Jeb's cable modem. Even if the CCC includes a download manager, there is a lot of content to be downloaded for a new user.

There is no DVD in the box but there are printed versions of the getting started and quick start guides. Why web based retailers are offering the boxed version is a puzzle? Cakewalk still plans on selling media, made on demand.

Right. I was initially going to get the boxed version since I like having a DVD, but decided against it since A. The DVD would be obsolete in a month, and more importantly B. Andrew stated on this forum that the box only contained a card. (Read, no DVD)

I guess this make sense for dealer's like Guitar Center (both WEB based and Mbrick/mortar) or for people that want the pretty box, who also like 78 records because of the album jackets.

Some people still like the box and as mentioned there are printed materials in it. Another good thing about shipping a card is the inventory is never obsolete.

Hmm missed this thread yesterday when I ordered - and, here I was thinking I spend too much time here!

Anyway, they should have communicated more clearly since Boxed Version doesn't mean what it used to. i.e. contain the hard copies of the Software.  At the very least, Cake and/or vendors should have clearly explained the contents with the added option of receiving the Redemption Code by email - best of both worlds! (almost)

BTW, Sweetwater switched it up for me so all's well.

P.S. downloads are always or should be current as well so not sure how the printed redemption code makes any difference whatsoever?
