Thank you for the answers... I was glad to know that versions are going away from now on. I didn't know that. Yeah, I am that uninformed guy, as you may have noticed. Well I guess I will take the advice and way for some time before jumping in the New Sonar bandwagon (since I just paid CW a couple hundred of dollars for X3, I do not want to spoil them by doing it again right away).

mbarsott I feel cheated because three times I received an email with a relatively good deal to update Sonar just to discover a new version was released a few weeks later. So I was buying something believing I was getting a good deal on the latest version.
Ahhh, now that's a different matter. In the past the updates have always been roughly 1 to 1.5 years apart, so once a version was a year or more old most folk not only expected a new version to be around the corner but started getting upset when it was "late". One of the ways to get the software at a good discount was to deliberately wait for the "great deal of the year" emails and get it cheap. The best ones being "Buy X2 NOW and get X3 FOR FREE". Ultimately you got the same software that everyone else did but paid less for it. The downside being that you were always at least a year behind with the latest "toys". From now on there are no version releases, just a continuous stream of updates. The first update is a big one, having everything they've been working on for the past 12 months that would have been included had they released as X4. As well as that, you get all the updates over the next 12 months, which would have been released as X5 in a years time. So effectively it's a 2 for 1 one deal, on top of which they're discounting it AS WELL. Looks like a great deal.

mbarsott You are telling me you know when a new release is about to come. Where is this information published?
There were countless "When is X4 coming out" threads here for the last few months. Cakewalk was always tight-lipped on the matter, but old-timers could read between the lines. There was actually quite an emotional buildup near the end of a cycle. I guess that fun is now over and gone for good.
Yeah, it makes sense. It seems I was partially at fault for what happened. I almost never come to this forum. I guess the next time I find an email offer attractive I should come here and ask if someone knows if there is a catch 22.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet. If your update was just, a few weeks ago, send Cakewalk Sales and email and put your case to them. It wouldn't be the first time that Cakewalk have responded by giving someone the better upgrade price. Always worth a try, they are very reasonable.

Good point Paul, and it is those offers sent out that triggers those threads of excitement of a new release...everyone knows the offers mean end of cycle and new a one is on the horizon. That said, as suggested several times you may want to contact CW...they have always been fair in the past depending on how much time has passed since your purchase.

I must be missing something with this no more version releases stuff. It sounds to me like just semantics. What's the difference between a new version release & an update? Isn't that what a version release was when it was just an added number to the version? Just added features & bug fixes. Instead of selling Producer X4 they're calling it Platinum. They'll either charge for an update in a year or two & still call it Platinum or call it Platinum Deluxe or something else but it will still be the same had they called it X5 Producer. It's not like once you buy it you'll never have to pay for another upgrade. This is typical business as usual & I'm all for it, but I don't see it as anything really different than what we're used to except in name only. I've been a Cakewalk fan for about 25 years & love their products & will continue to upgrade when i feel the need so I'm not knocking them in any way. I'm a Cakewalk user because of their products & fair pricing, not because of their marketing & version naming strategy.

The difference is that before (after the last patch) you waited till the next version to get a bug fixed even though some bugs were fixed by Cakewalk developers between the last patch and the new version. Now you'll get the fixes as they're completed. Cakewalk is also promising new stuff every month, so there won't be a 'hole' of 6 -12 months before additions are brought to the core program.

Karyn Everyone who upgraded X1 - X2 - X3 - Platinum (and didn't deliberately update late to out of date versions) paid way more than you. Why exactly do you feel cheated?
I would not call using an older version for some time a deliberate update to out of date versions. Why would someone do such a thing? The reason I did not update to X3 right away, is because I had just spent money upgrading to X2. And the reason I did upgraded to X2 late is because when it was released I had just spent money updating to X1.
So in a year upgrade to Platinum. Simples. Do it the way you have always done it then you're not "cheated".

The difference is that instead of waiting a year or more and then getting a new version with lots of changes all at once, then waiting 3 months while they release several bug fixes, you now get each individual update as soon as it is ready. then another, and another... If there is a problem that needs fixing it can be quickly rolled back and a fix release without borking* all the rest of the software. *yes, that's an official word

I have not read all the Post's but here is my opinion: When someone want to sell a product like, a house, car , boat or a program like cakewalk sonar / Cubase whatever it is.... the seller and buyer must agree on the trade. Now usually a buyer intend to purchase whatever it is, in great condition. the seller if it is a trustworthy and sincerely seller...... he sell you a great product. Now if the product is great, both are happy... and no other trades or issues need to be done. The word spreads, you can safely buy from him... , others will also do trades with him and make him some moneyz. Case closed, no issues....
................................................................................................................................... (The problem arise, when the seller have product issues....) All great1. We will do all the updates for free, cause we want the buyer to have a fully working product. ( the customer will be happy, he buys the product ) and he will spread the word how great the product is, and he will continue to use the product. ok....to a certain level2. We will do the updates, but we charge $25, per update... costing him maybe up to 50% more than expected for the " final " product. ( this do not give a quite happy customer ) he will get his product for more. will he spread the word, maybe and maybe not, will he continue to use the product, well it depends.... A pain3. We will do updates, it is free for a while, then we make another version after. ( the buyer get he's product, and it is still bug'd at the end ) the developer offers the new version for " lets say " $199 ( the buyer get the new version and pay up the money, he now hope it is all " solved or better " ) No the buyer still get bug's and a unstable product, will it be better ? Hopefully ! will the buyer continue to use the product, that depends and some will change to another ( DAW ) Will there be a solution, no ever, the bugs continue to live in the next version....and so forth. hey it mutate's ? So i say : I want my product stable from day one, at a main price with no strange " after effects..." Let's get a product that works, before any " new version " is coming out It is priority one (1) to have a rock solid program and a happy developer, and customers. Then come with the new , special, tasty new version, when it is all " professional baked " in the oven That is Pro , and Pro sell's. ( for now ill keep my X3, it serves me well enough ) Jan

Bump..., what is your opinion's ? btw, i agree that a developer must have cash for a new product, that's not the issue ! everyone need they'r money to live of course. Issue is if the buyer never get's a stable product, regardless of what version he /she may have.

I agree with your assessment here. You did leave out typical life spans and how long you would expect legacy products to be supported. Rock solid may also be an unreasonable request due to differences among machines and other products installed etc. I have been pretty happy with the value and stability of X3. Rocky

And if / when they may be able to fix a version to more or less, " bug free " ! And then they release a new version, it is most commonly that the BUG found... is in the new Code rather than the old, making it easier to track down and fix... right ? if they do not add 100 new thingy's in there... ( but it will still be in the new code ) It is easy, lets all agree that there will be no, new version or added functions until everything works and let the bakers have time to do their work. We cant expect to have / get a good product, if we nag all the time about i want this and i want that for functions let the programmers do their work and fix what is already there and it will be great. Jan, you seem like a good guy with some good points. Peoples seeming unwillingness to engage with you is caused by 10 days of talking about this whole new deal and some(at least me)are a bit burned out.
