no different than Sonar LE that's bundled with soundcards, IMO.

in sonar's case, it's an older version of Sonar, it's free, but it's limited.  limited tracks, limited how many softsynths and VST's can be inserted.

Think of it as a glorified demo.
The 3 projects limit will be a show stopper for most.

Yanno... although you kid that brings up an interesting thought (well interesting to my derpy brain module).

So what's up with that three project max? You can only have three projects on the go at once or you export three times and the program bricks itself?

No matter. Here's my thinking. I know a lot of studios and customers in general want to see things in PT. I'm thinking one could do everything they need to in Sonar, export the individual tracks or stems, import it into this PT light then save it as a bonafide PT project to send off to whoever is being an Avidocious analism.

As much as I am extremely resistant to even looking at PT I know I really should at least poke around at it to see what all the hubbub is about and learn the basics in case I find myself sitting in a PT based studio at some point. I think I may have a demo version on disc around here somewhere but if they are offering an up to date freebie version I may just have to check it out.

Currently I'm expererimenting with another new DAW that I think is actually going to be useful to me but I do intend to demo all the big ones over time. There are only a few I'd actually puchase though and PT ain't one of them.

hi Beep,
was only partly kidding.
I have lost a few projects to my ProTools competitors-there`s always a pause  in the enquiry when I mention Sonar regardless of the quality of previous work.
unfortunately there is a mindset in this town that its PT or nothing and when you are paying good money you want "the best."
probably 90-95% of my recording is remixed and mastered externally and my job is to provide a conducive environment and record ,exactly as it is performed so to me a wav is just a wav and the medium is irrelavent, mic choice and placement and room knowledge are more important to me.

the truth is I have 100% faith in 8.5 and work mostly with templates I have accumulated and there is so much happening during live recording, the last thing I need is a new workflow to distract me.
an analogy-we played a mini-festival on the weekend without a soundcheck and I used the on stage amp and halfway through the first song I realised I need more gain and mids ,turned around to where the ampeg should be and it wasn`t exactly where it should be-got away with it but it was unsettling.
ha-I`m full of analogies this morning, must be the extra coffee but:
Sonar ,to me is like early 90`s Mercedes Benz`s,-rock solid, comfortable and virtually indestructible.
what more could you ask for!!

It is a pretty truncated version, designed for getting people interested in the paid versions. Apparently all (3) of your permitted projects have to be stored in the (Avid's) cloud. Limited tracks, limited inputs etc. It would let you learn the interface if you are planning to work at a ProTools studio or buy the full version.
