Nice one Dan.  More and more layers are added as the song progresses.  This must have been a complicated song to mix!

Thanks Walt! Actually, it was easier than you would think, but I started mixing from the end of the song to the beginning so I didn't hit the master bus too hard. While there were a lot of tracks, I didn't have to do that much automation on this one.

Yeah, we usually have up to 30 or 35 tracks depending on how many vocal tracks I do.  I do the vocals in a way that well, Mark(Pugtones) likes but Spacey doesn't, which I just found out on the last tune I did with him.  Mark does all the final mixing, etc.  I can't imagine 100 tracks, and though this sound great, full and rich, I have to wonder why so many tracks?  It intrigues me and I feel a learning thing for me here.  Great sound, Dan.  90 tracks and you couldn't find 1 for vocal.  Ha, that's a joke!! I would like to see a video or something with this.  That'd be cool!

The short answer is that I layer instruments a lot, but I always keep the layers on separate tracks so I can change my mind. Every guitar is double tracked. For guitars that are on the left and right, I double tracked each side (4 tracks). Two snares, two kicks, two sets of toms, etc... It all adds up pretty fast.

Classic Dan. You definitely have a great feel for this style. I did like the way the song built, I thought it was fairly epic at the beginning but it got epicer (my term). I guess my only feeling at the end was that there was no let up from the epicness (not my term but gave my spell checker a shudder anyway), I'm not sure whether that was mix or production related. But that is not a criticism, just a thought. I guess this song would suit a scene where there was no let up in the action that was occurring.
It's a great piece of advice to begin your mix at the end. I have sometimes got to the end of the song only to find I have to go back to the start 'cause I'm over.

I kind of felt the middle section was more of a breather after the epic opening and before the big finish. I thought about adding a fourth section between the middle and end and go in a subtly different direction and then return to the main theme, but didn't want to end up with an eight minute song, lol.

Thanks Bob! That's how I write. I have to hear what I am writing in my head by visualizing it, whether it be in a particular space or some event or interaction. I've always considered music to be painting with sound, so I guess that's why this works for me.

Thanks Reece! I doubt you remember, but you commented on a song I did years ago that stung at the time, but forced me to be more objective while mixing. You were absolutely right at the time, and I was almost ready to hear it, lol. Thanks for being honest then.

Hey Dan, I don't specifically remember, but we all need to be stung occasionally.  I know I've been stung a few times myself (and I know it will happen again!).  it either helps us to grow or discourages us if we let it.

this particular piece is fantastic and if it is any indication of the hard work you've done since my comment, then I am humbled that you felt my comments worthy of action! bravo!
