The River Song

This is a new instrumental I've been working on. It was recorded with Sonar X3e and then mixed and mastered in Sonar Platinum. I used the Pro Channel effects for this one, and tried to learn my way around Platinum a bit. I used EZD2 for drums, EZkeys for keyboard, Amplitube for bass and S-gear for guitars. I appreciate your opinions...Thanks a lot!

I like that guitar, nice work.

I did a river dance while listening to the river song.

I may mix up the drums a bit more.

Nice groove you have there Clint, overall it sound well here though there did not seem to be the weight in the kick I would have expected and yes the drums are a little understated in the mix.

Guitar does indeed sound great. Very Santana-ish. Nice melody, too. I think the drums and percussion are just right, volume-wise. I'd boost the low end on the kick a little, but that's all.

Thanks guys! I am just about to go back and listen to everything again (with fresh ears). As far as S-Gear goes...This is a custom preset using the Jackal. The Ir is the Basketweave 25 with a 57 on the cone edge and a 160 on the cone edge. I didn't use S-gear for effects. I used in order...Valhallaubermod for chorus, tritik Delay and Valhallavintageverb. The rhythm guitars were also S-gear using the Wayfarer amp.

Thanks...I keep hearing timing issues myself! Hahaha. S-gear is pretty awesome. It took some time for me to warm up to it, but it's a keeper. If you guys really like this sound I can send you the preset, maybe you guys can improve it.

I did a quick re-mix to fix a few things. (new links up top) I added some low end to the kick and turned the bass down by 1db. I smoothed out a little guitar thing towards the end that was driving me crazy...so now I'm happy.

Great! I like everything except the ending, mostly because I didn't want it to end. You might consider a long slow fade out, or something big and orchestral with cymbal rolls, or? It's a little truncated feeling as is.

I'd love the S-Gear patch if you are inclined! Your guitar work is exemplary, and I would suggest pushing it up in the mix just a bit more.

    cheers,

@emeraldsoul...Thanks a lot! PM me your e-mail and I'll send you the S-gear patch I made. The patch will have S-gear effects. I turned them off and used other effects for this song (the list is above), but the S-gear effects are good too.

I like the drums pretty much where they are. Your guitar work is great, well played and just so listenable.
Bass is my second instrument , and like your other song I just had a listen to, I feel the bass is just a little heavy for your style. It's just a preference but I feel you could lighten it up with a different patch or amp setting. I am listening through headphones at the moment so it seems like it should be less noticeable than through the studio monitors. Anyways, just a thought on first listen.
Your mixing skills are to be commended, you have a great feel for your songs.

Thanks for taking the time to listen to them both. I wanted the instruments to be pretty much even, as far as perception goes. I wanted the guitar to just be a part of the whole and not to "upfront". I probably could have turned the bass down a little...I did turn it down some from the first mix, but maybe it's still a bit too much. Thanks for the observations, I appreciate it.

This is awesome Clint! Love your playing and the groove is really smoove...

I think the bass is just right, but I think it got a little busy in the last third of the song. The earlier groove between the bass and drums really worked for me.

S-Gear, ir, and whatever else you are talking about makes me think I going backwards in this stuff.  Add it all up and I really liked the sound of this song.  Drums and all sounded good to me.  I will say that listening to the music and seeing the tornado made me think that a sailboat and a sunset might have gone better with the music.  You could name it " A boat on the water sailing into the sunset on a warm evening".  Ha, just kidding, buddy.  Couldn't fit that on the album.  I did think of this as a mellow tune, loved it, and did seem a bit disconnected with the tornado.  My comment to me would be.  Who cares?  LOL  Really nice tune, Clint.

The tornado pic is going to be the cover art of my next cd. I'm too lazy to do one for each song! Ha! The bass used Amplitube Ampeg (just so you know since your a bass player). I've got some other stuff I'm working on were I'm using the Mark bass studio...I don't know which I like best so far.

Sounds great Clint. I'm certain I've heard this track multiple times now (either via my Soundcloud feed because I'm following you or perhaps through our previous communiques). Either way these are exactly the tones I had in my head while listening to your stuff way back when but could not describe properly. Absolutely perfect IMO.

I'm amazed at how fluid your playing is... for so long.  It never gets rushed, you're always right in the pocket.

That's more or less what I was going say..I always have a smile when I hear you play like that Clint, same grin I get listening to Guthrie Govan.

    Excellent track.

Came for the Dr. Who reference. Stayed for the sweet track.

Now you're gonna have me bugging you for tips. lol

Ha! This was named after Doctor Who! My daughter is a huge fan (whovian) so I named it this to make her smile. Thanks for the other compliments...I think you guys are being too kind as usual, but I do appreciate it!

Thanks James. I'll have to look up Guthrie Govan (I live under a rock)...I tried for a few days to play this live all the way through, but finally punched in twice for my sanity. There are also two spots were it's overdubbed for effect...which turned out okay. Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Yes, a hint of Carlos in there. Lovely tone and groove. I really like those little "whistle" tones.
I'm a big fan of guitar inflection, and this has plenty of that.

IDK, Clint. Admittedly I only checked it out on my lappy with my gen purpose cans but it sounds pretty darned pro to me. Nothing stood out or sounded off to me in the slightest and I get distracted by minor flaws in major studio releases.
