Can someone please explain to me how to set up an arpeggiator? Like I'm a six year old?

It's clearly a glitch. In my brain that is.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to link an arpeggiator to a midi synth in Sonar X1 (or in any program really). The instructions I've seen online seem to bypass important steps (that I assume are merely a given for the common man), or are centered around versions from days of yore. Can someone walk me through this, with kid gloves?

Thanks!

Are you talking about an arpeggiator plugin which outputs MIDI? If so, it's a fairly easy process. In the VST options dropdown menu at the top of the window, make sure "enable MIDI out" is checked. This will make the plugin available as a MIDI input.

Next, you want to capture that MIDI output on a MIDI track and send it to the synth. If you look in the input selector of the synth's MIDI track, you should see your arpeggiator's MIDI output. Select it. You will have to select the correct MIDI channel of course - your arpeggiator may have an option to select a MIDI channel. If not just use channel 1.

This is all off the top of my head however since I'm not in front of Sonar, so if these instructions are confusing or downright wrong (strong possibility ) then just let me know.

Well I teach 6 years olds,, so my lesson plan would be something like.

Arpeggiator song - pre teach vocabulary with actions, then sing along
Show flash cards and drill the words of each function
Game - Maybe put the flash cards on the wall, call out the words and you'd throw the ball at the flashcards
Make a picture of an arpeggiator plug in
Break time (Toilet and Water)
Review vocabulary Game - Have the flash cards on the floor, turn over one or two, and you have to say which ones are missing.
Open Sonar......

I'm not sure this is the best approach to be honest, I'd go with Sharks reply

FWIW, X1 lacks MIDI I/O options in the VST drop down. Also there are some pretty bad bugs in versions prior to X3 with plug-ins which generate MIDI data. Do not use more than one plug-in with "Enable MIDI Output" enabled at a time. Here is a step-by-step process for Blue Arp I wrote in another thread for older versions of SONAR:
  1. Insert Blue Arp as a Simple Instrument Track. make sure to check "Enable MIDI Output" in the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialog or after inserting the arp right-click on it in the synth rack and select "Enable MIDI Output".
  2. Insert the synth of your choice into the project , verify the synth makes sound
  3. Set the input on the (instrument or MIDI) synth track to "Blue Arp Omni"
  4. Make sure both tracks have input echo on
  5. Add MIDI notes the Blue Arp track
  6. Play project

So there 3 options for Arps outside a synths internal arp fiunction
1) VST Arp as described by above by Sharke and Scook
2) Sonars built in ARP, which can be accessed by clicking I to open the inspector when on a midi track
3) a Midi FX (as opposed to a VST) that is loaded into the FX bin of the MIDI track - Right click bin> Midi plugins> Cakewalk Plugins> Arpggiator

With options 2 and 3, if you load you instruments as Simple Instrument Tracks (Insert>soft synth>VST2> Loung lizard, then only have ticked 'Simple Instrument Track'), Then you access the Midi Inspector by Pressing I, then  in the bottom left corner of the Inspector you'll see too tabs (audion/midi). Clicking Midi will reveal the Arpeggiator for option 2, and the Midi FX bin for option 3.

Thank you to all for your help. Sorry for the late reply. I didn't want to write back until I got to try it out, which was just now. :)

It works. Finally!

This was genius by the way. As I have 4 kids (one of them a six year old), I literally LOL'd. As did my wife when I showed her your reply. :)

I still don't understand why you want to set up an ARP like a six year old...

I'm lost too.  I understand the output is midi notes arranged in a pattern but, what about the input?  Do you "feed" the arp midi notes?  How does the arp know to output the notes over sixteenth, quarter or half note patterns?  Can an arp derive a pattern just from chord root notes?

You play and hold a chord for an Arp tool to turn into an arpeggiorated pattern. you then tell the Arp tool the rules that you want it to base the pattern on. note length, up/down/up and down, how many octaves, apply swing etc.

Good, because it's day 20 since Thomann dispatched my new Bass, and they say 10-20 days.

And I worry when having things shipped a few hundred km from the 'States.

Cheers. I have to pay an import tax and collect it when it arrives. In a way, its assuring to know it can't get delivered to the wrong place. Thomann double boxed my Epiphone Dot last time, so hopefully it won't sustain any damage. One week to the national holiday, some I'm hoping it's here by the end of the week., otherwise it will be at least 2 weeks and racking my nerves further.
