KONTAKT and Program Change Numbers

Hi, I am using Kontakt in SONAR X3e and am beginning to use Program Change messages to change patches within a Bank in Kontakt.

A Kontakt Bank has slots for patches which begin numbering on 001 and extends to 128. However, unless I am missing something, when I send a Program Change number 001 to Kontakt from a SONAR MIDI track Kontakt responds by changing the program to its second slot (002). This leaves the 001 slot open in Kontakt which causes loading errors on subsequent occasions. There seems to be no option to send a Program Change number 000 to Kontakt from SONAR. The Program Change method I am using in the one marked "Normal*" in the Insert>Bank/Patch Change menu in SONAR (what is that asterisk for?).

My solution has been to insert a "dummy" patch in slot 001 in Kontakt and that solves the problem of loading, but potentially takes up more memory.

I hope this isn't confusing and I'm hoping someone else had dealt with this in using Kontakt with SONAR and can provide a solution. All info appreciated.

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.

Sonar numbers patches from 0-127.  There should be an <unknown> entry in sonar's patch list above 001.  this would correspond to patch 001 in the kontakt bank.

Hi swamptooth!

Thanks for the response. YES!! That was it. I was confused by the <unknown> designation (hoping for a zero I guess). That works perfectly. I suppose it should have been obvious to me.

Thanks again!

This has been an on again - off again thing between kontakt and sonar.  Glad it's on again.
One neat thing if you use any other ni synths with program change functionality (like fm8 or massive) is if you enable "translate bank/patch changes" in the plugin properties, sonar will actually list the names of the patches of those synths in the patch change dialog.  pretty slick!
