New SONAR Book: The Power in Cakewalk SONAR - Hal Leonard Books

Hi,

I just wanted to mention that my new short-form QuickPro guide for SONAR is just out - The Power in Cakewalk SONAR. The book focuses on the core workflows in SONAR. It is to-the-point with 300 illustrations and screenshots. It is a great quick guide for anyone switching from another DAW or jumping from SONAR 8.5 to the X series. Screenshots and videos were done with X2a but other than the changes to comping it's completely relevant for X3 users. It includes a DVD with 12 tutorials.

Here are some pictures of the book include the table of contents and list of videos:

If you liked Mixing with SONAR X1 from Groove 3, then you might want to check it out. It's also under $13 at Barnes & Noble so it's not a big investment.

Not to be confused with Scott G's Sonar Power series.

Thanks, John! No, the SONAR Power book series is an entirely different series. More info here http://www.garrigus.com/

Right Scott,

I did suggest changing the name but the publisher insisted it follow the pattern of the other "The Power in... " books from Hal Leonard Books: The Power in Cubase, The Power in Logic Pro, The Power in Reason, The Power in Digital Performer.

I suppose it should have been named "The Power in TASCAM Software SONAR."

If enough people request a Kindle version, the Hal Leonard will put it out. Thanks for asking!

If anyone here has an audio blog or are willing to write an Amazon review of the book, I have a few promo copies. Send me a PM if you are interested, and I will send you one.

Knowing there are  simple to follow videos included like the one you posted gives this book a lot of value, particularly for beginners or people coming from older Sonar series.  great job

It does in the sense that it largely focuses on core workflows that are unchanged between X2 and X3. I would not recommended it if you are still on X1 however because the Smart Tool, Zooming etc changed a lot between X1 and X2.

The things that aren't covered in the book are the new X3 comping and Melodyne integration.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Having bought your book just after getting SONAR X3 Producer --- and just before the SONAR Artist/Professional/Platinum release -- I'm hesitant before opening both.
-- How much of your instruction is applicable to the new software's changes?
-- Are there plans for a revised edition?

The book covers the essential core workflows of the SONAR X series and was written using X2. The basics of recording and editing have not changed and all the effects and instruments covered are still there. There is no coverage of Addictive Drums or Nomad Factory bundled effects. The sections on installation cover the old way which will completely different in the new subscription model. The ProChannel QuadCurve EQ now has a large view which was added after the book, so you would need to learn about that elsewhere too. There is however coverage of most of the third part and optional ProChannel modules. Comping has improved somewhat since the book. Also the book features examples using Roland hardware. At the time I wrote the book Roland still owned Cakewalk. Today, it's part of Gibson/Tascam.

On the other hand, I get positive feedback weekly from people that love the book. It's usually a pretty low cost investment. For more up-to-date training, check out Groove3.com for video tutorials.

As far as producing a new edition of the book, that is unlikely. The publisher is no longer focusing on this type book because the quick release cycles make the book out of date less than a year ofter publishing. You could check with them, but I think there is little chance that there will be a new edition.

Thank you for asking!

This version is still useful, considering the Cost. As he mentioned,  it covers core workflow and features thst have mostly been carried over. For a beginnig Sonar user, this book brings much value.
