Skating, a tone poem

Skating is a full-orchestra work, the second movement of my Three Winter Scenes suite. This version was done in Sonar 8.5, using only Track, Event and Staff Views. Sounds are from Garritan, EWQLSO Gold, Vienna Sp. Ed. 1, and Cinematic Strings2. Also, I use several Dim Pro sounds, as well as one from TTS1 (tuba). One reason I am posting it is so people can appreciate what can be done working in staff view. (There is currently a debate about SV and improving it). I work almost exclusively in staff view. So it is valuable, and IMO should not continue to be neglected in updates. Thanks for listening.

    Hi Michael,

As someone else who makes great use of the staff view I was keen to hear your tune unfortunately your link would appear to be private.

Why not post to a soundcloud account and put the link here instead.

PS I broke the links in your post that I have quoted here

Yes, I got the same result. I guess Dropbox doesn't work well for this. I guess I need to rethink this.
By the way, can I delete this thread myself, or does admin have to do it?

Unfortunately deletion is down to either a forum moderator or a host.

Though why not try soundcloud or the Composers Forum they seem to allow higher bit rates i.e.320kb/s MP3's and you may find that your music has some appeal there.  With that though then you could edit you first post with a working link.  I would prefer to see that than taking the some what drastic action of deleting your post.

If however you do want this thread/post deleted please confirm by PM'ing me directly.

Thanks, actually I am already on Composers forum (in fact I'm an admin). I just opened a Box account and am uploading. I will paste in that link and remove the old one and hopefully that will work.

I just posted a link to it for Box.com. It seems to be working. I uploaded an audio file, as the sound does matter with orchestral music - it can get pretty muddy so highest sound quality is best. Although I'm going to make an mp3 at 320 to compare.

This is a nice journey. I can see Snoopy and Marcie, I'm pretty sure it's Marcie, doing a routine on the frozen lake.

My only crit would be to use more dynamics.

    Excellent work!

Thanks! yes, the flute solo is meant to portray a child or uncoordinated adult attempting some tricky maneuvers on the ice. I marked it Rubato, so the flutist can do whatever they want with it.

The criticism is totally valid, I definitely am challenged dynamically. Partly because I use step-record. but also I tend to control dynamics by adding and subtracting instruments, rather than spending all that time doing it the right way!

I like this a lot.  I don't listen much to orchestral tunes any more but well into my teens I listened to the classical stations, while I was playing rock and roll for a living.  That seems odd but I liked it.  I have thought of getting into a piece and trying to do orchestration but the older I get the more I just do what I know.  This is quite interesting and I listened to the whole 7 + minutes.  I usually lose interest before that.  So, kudos.
