That's because Sonar and most wave editors can play any format. I'm not sure about WMP or iTunes. Just saying I've always used the default WAVE at the top of the list and I've always changed it to 16 bit because it's going to a CD.
I then master in Wave Lab before using Nero to burn it.
I use Gold Wave to batch convert to MP3 160 or 320.
Sonar works in 32 bit so that's probably why the default.
