We just didn't die!

We were going down South Durango on our way to the vet to pick up our sick kitten when this idiot decided to cross...

He went across 3 lanes + the center lane and never ever put the brakes on. Actually he sped up.

While we were waiting for the traffic inspector, the police officer allowed me to walk to get some papers which we were supposed to pic at our other vet office, just a few blocks away. I waited for my light and almost got ran over by another dude who never even looked at me before he turned...

I'm just glad to be home.

Wow -  Glad you got home safe - but, man wouldn't like to see that idiot's driving witnessed and then pulled over by a big ol' mean state trooper?
Good luck with your insurance. That's what it's for

Thanks.

Fortunately for us, we had 2 guys and a girl who saw every thing and ran out of the Jack in the Box to ask if we were okay, help us out and even went to the police man when he arrived to say they were available as witnesses. Some people at the gas station where we went to call a cab afterwards told us they'd watched the whole thing on the screen, so it was also filmed...

There's just no understanding why the other driver even tried to cross w/o even slowing down in the center lane. We had the lights on and everything... South Durango isn't a tiny two lanes street, and we were right after the traffic light, so there's always heavy traffic one way or another.

We spoke to our guy first thing when we got here (we'd called in from the scene, but our phone died on us). We'll have a car delivered to us early tomorrow, and things are alright.

We called the vet to ask them if they could keep the kitten for the night and they offered to do it free of charge. For one dimwit involved in this accident, we've actually got to witness a lot of kindness and some very genuinely nice people, so it's hard to be mad at anyone.

And the cab who picked us us had the best music selection I've ever heard in a cab in my life (classical music).

That being said, now that dust is settling, I do realize that my whole right side doesn't feel quite alright. Neck and shoulder and arm definitely feel funny. Pinky's kind of numb. Lower back and hip aren't tip top either. But I have the best physiotherapist in the land, if need be.

Glad you are OK and the people rallying around to help shows there is still good in humanity.

Dealing with idiot's erratic lane changes and weaving are part and parcel of driving in Dubai, you just hope your luck does not run out. One of my colleagues fell victim, fortunatly at low speed and was amazed to find the prepatrator was a fellow American.

Re: We just didn't die! 2015/01/31 01:19:23 (permalink)
I finally got my learner's permit in January of last year, because my wife insisted, we were planning a family, and I felt that I owed it to her to at least be there as a back up driver.

But I really hate the idea and didn't get to drive around much. I have to renew the darn thing for another year, but honestly, I seem to get more nervous around cars all the time.

My wife's a phenomenal driver - she drives stick, she does parallel parking like I've never seen - she's been a vehicle coordinator for flms for a while and had to drive all kinds of crazy vehicles. I trust her more than I'd trust myself or anyone. But it's the rest of the people around us - like that guy this afternoon...

Wow. Sometimes life happens super fast and in slow motion at the same time, particularly car accidents. One minute someone is laughing the next minute they are gone. There is always someone in the other lane texting, tuning the radio, digging around in the floorboard, looking around at the kids in the backseat, etc.. not to mention how many of them are on drugs (legal or illegal, and drinking) and there are way more cars and trucks on the roads than the roads were designed to handle. I have become a LOT more careful than I used to be.
Rain... I'm really glad you are both OK!!!!!

It has been 40 years since I've seen a Jack in the Box.

I am really happy you are BOTH OK! All you can do is be careful and have 'cat reflexes'!

Glad you're safe, man. Those close scrapes really make you think about stuff, eh? I've had my share and while some people seem to get some kind of "new lease" or whatever out of these things I personally am not a fan.

And what the heck is up with some drivers? So many people out there have absolutely NO business having a license.

On a positive note, the car they provided as a temporary replacement put a smile on my face and was enough to make me get over my apprehensions and back on the road.

They really are the only "sports" car I've ever even had the remotest desire to own. I do not even know why. My "dream car" is a panel van with a pull out ramp to get stuff into it (including gimpy old me) and maybe some modest sleeping setup in the back for camping out. Totally logical and practical.

A Mustang? It has no benefit to me over any other car to get from point A to point B yet every time I see one (except for the ones built during the "suckage" period) I get a little jazzed.

Must be some underlying "dude" instinct kicking in. lol

Me I usually don't care for cars, unless it's older ones - mostly classic designs from the 40's through 60's. These get my attention. And so does the Mustang for whatever reason. It's one of the few exceptions.

That being said, the Cherokee was still the best option for us. We need all that room when it's errands day.
