Can 32 bit and 64 bit installations coexist?

Please forgive me if this has already been covered over and over over the years....but...

I (almost) accidentally installed SONAR Platinum as 64 bit.  At some point, I was going to have to do this on purpose anyway, but there are issues...

When opening a legacy project with DX and DXi plugs, I'm getting failures...to be expected I suppose since the docs say that 32-bit DirectX plugins aren't supported.  However, when I go back and try to open the same project in SONARR X3 (32 bit), it complains that now it can't find...

Track Eq ()
Track Tube Saturation ()
GroovePlayer (Track: 'LRS track bus')

There are separate 32 and 64 bit paths for VSTs...bujt what happens with the old Sonitus stuff and the GroovePlayer that renders the metronome?

Can anyone point me to the threads were this has been covered?

The C3 installs the version based on the OS. To force a 32bit installation on 64bit Windows, run the installers manually and select the 32bit option. The default location for the installers is "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads." 32/64bit works just like every previous version which supported both.

So, you're saying when we let the Command Center install it, it's gonna see my 64 bit OS and automatically give me 64 bit SONAR?? That's not good. I still run 32 bit Sonar to be able to continue using some older, out of date, and some DXI plugins I just can't seem to give up just yet. They should give us an option.

I'd be very surprised if it assumed you wanted 64-bit everything just because you're running a 64-bit O/S. That would make no sense at all, except maybe as a default selection on a fresh install. For updates it would have to check which version(s) of SONAR are presently installed. In any case, it should not overwrite, disable or otherwise prevent you from using your existing 32-bit plugins, whether DX or VST. Worst case is you have to re-scan your plugins after installing 64-bit SONAR, because your 32-bit versions may have been moved to c:\program files (x86).

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Bit I don't see a way to modify what version is installed in the Command Center. I do have only 64 bit Sonar X3 installed and it may be seeing that.  In my case I only wanted the 64 bit Sonar Platinum installed on my desktop.

It also doesn't ask what files types you want associated with Sonar.

C3 does a "hands-off" install, and makes educated guesses as to what your options should be.
Contrary to common opinion, you do not have to use C3.

I also run 32-bit SONAR on 64-bit windows. You do not want to perform installs or upgrades using C3. Instead, either stop the install after the file download and run the install manually (old-school-fashion) or download the installer manually from the Cakewalk web site, and install manually.

You can select all the normal options that way.

Re: Can 32 bit and 64 bit installations coexist? 2015/02/16 22:28:22 (permalink)
I see that most of the stuff either has 64 bit specific filenames (like in the case of the Shared Utilities\Internal stuff that shows up in the ProChannel)...or goes into 32 or 64 bit specific directory structures (like VST, VST3, Program Files, Program Files (x86).

But...

What happens with stuff like the Sonitus DX plugs that normally go in Shared Plugins?  What differentiates the 32 bit versions from the identically named 64 bit versions?

They are installed in different paths "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Plugins" for 64bit and "C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Shared Plugins" for 32bit and are registered in different parts of the registry.

Copy that. The 32 bit version only looks in the (x86) folders.
I just checked, and all of the old DX effects are there.
I've got the Sonitus Compressor and Cakewalk Power Strip on the screen as we speak.
